FLINT, Mich. (2/23/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team is busy preparing for its upcoming #MetroSeries game and the Horizon League Championship, but the Titans were busy with another cause on Monday as the squad was in Flint, Michigan, helping distribute water to the local residents.
"I was proud of our guys and the way they came up today and helped out Anton's (Wilson) local community," said head coach
Ray McCallum.
The Titans teamed with Absopure to have over 1,500 cases of water delivered to the Broome Center and from there, the Titans handed it out to over 100 cars for families that needed bottled water due to the ongoing crisis in the area.
The entire University started a donation site to collect water, money and supplies for the residents, with most contributions being collected during the men's and women's basketball home games in the last few weeks.
Senior men's basketball player
Anton Wilson – who is from Flint and still has family living right across the street from the Broome Center – and sophomore women's basketball player
Chea Taylor – who has family roots in the area – started GoFundme pages to help the residents as well.
"Chea started it and I wanted to get involved too," said Wilson. "It is sad to see all around here where I grew up and the fact that they can't use the water. It is something you don't even think about these days because you take it for granted that you have water, but not here."
Wilson's mom, Monica, was also at the distribution point, where she has volunteered to hand out water during this time.
The Titan women's basketball team will also make a trip to the area to help out the residents at a later date.
