Results: Men's Epee | Men's Foil | Men's Sabre
COLUMBUS (3/12/2016) -- Five University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing student-athletes competed at the 2016 NCAA Midwest Fencing Regionals on Saturday, which were held at French Field House at Ohio State University.
Three Titans were fencing in their first regional tournament, while juniors
Austin Carlisle and
Aaron Dittel were each making their third appearances at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
Detroit freshman
Algird Szumlas had the top finish for the Titans, placing eighth out of 12 fencers in the foil. Szumlas, the No. 8 ranked foilist in the region entering the tournament, went 4-7 in his pool play bouts, which included a 4-3 win over Ohio State's Nicola Sirito. Szumlas with an indicator of -12 (29 touches scored and 41 touches received).
Dittel placed 11th out of 13 fencers in the epee for the Titans. He had a mark of 2-10 with an indicator of -31 (27 touches scored and 58 touches received). His victories came over Cleveland State's Paul Duchow and Lawrence's Philip Ziller.
Carlisle finished ninth in the sabre for Detroit, posting a mark of 1-9 for the Titans, but scoring at least two touches in every bout except one. Fencing in his first NCAA Midwest Regional, sophomore
Allen Gray was 10th for Detroit in the sabre.
Freshman
Josh Blackburn also made his NCAA Midwest Regional debut, earning an 11th place finish for the Titans. His victory came over Cleveland State's Alexander Hoirup by a 5-3 margin.
