TAMPA, Fla. (3/7/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team fell at South Florida, 8-0, on Monday afternoon from USF Softball Stadium in the Sunshine State.
Detroit (5-14) spotted South Florida (12-9) five runs in the bottom of the first inning and couldn't right the ship. The Bulls added two more in the third and another in the fourth before locking up the victory in five innings.
The Titans were held to just two hits, with
Kristen Garceau and
Alyssa James each going 1-for-2 from the dish.
Freshman pitcher
Ashley Mauser had been on a roll coming into the game, but wasn't as sharp on Monday. Mauser took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season, allowing an uncharacteristic seven runs on five hits and four walks.
Junior
Keaira Schilling came on in relief and held the Bulls to one run on two hits over the final two innings of the game.
Detroit's best scoring opportunity came in the second as James led off the inning with a single to left-center. Junior
Jenna Reeves walked to put a pair of runners on, but a groundout ended the Titans' threat.
UDM returns to action Tuesday against Florida Atlantic (17-2). First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Boca Raton, Fla.
