DETROIT (4/27/16) – Senior
Christa McGahuey smacked two homeruns, breaking the all-time Titan record for career homers and leading the University of Detroit Mercy softball team to a doubleheader sweep over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon from Buysse Ballpark.
The homeruns, the 27
th and 28
th of McGahuey's career, break the record of 26 held by Kaleigh Rafter.
The sweep increases Detroit's win total to 17 – the highest mark for the program since 2006.
The Titans scored at least a run in five of six at-bats in the opener and outgunned the visiting Bonnies to pick up an 8-5 win in the opener. Detroit picked up 13 hits in game two and behind a strong start from McGahuey in the circle, completed the sweep with a 5-2 win.
McGahuey and sophomore
Savvy Ferstle each picked up a pair of homeruns on the day, with the duo recording a homer in each game.
Detroit took a 2-0 lead on McGahuey's two-run missile in the first inning of game one, before the Bonnies plated three runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead.
The Titans scored the next four five runs as junior
Keaira Schilling made a strong relief appearance to pick up the win.
Schilling finished the game with one run allowed in five innings of relief. Schilling allowed four hits, struck out three and induced 10 groundouts to improve to 3-6 on the season.
In the nightcap, St. Bonaventure struck first with a manufactured run via a sacrifice fly to lead 1-0 after the top of one. Detroit answered immediately on a RBI single from junior
Alyssa James in the bottom of the frame and took the lead on a RBI double by freshman
Jordan Manno in the bottom of the third.
McGahuey hit her second homer of the day in the fifth, followed by Ferstle's second blast two batters later that pushed the Titan lead to 5-1.
St. Bonaventure was able to scrape a second run across in the sixth, but McGahuey set the final five batters down in a row to record the complete game victory.
McGahuey allowed just four hits in seven innings of work and struck out six to snag her third win of the season.
Detroit out-hit the Bonnies 13-4 in game two, with five Titans recording multiple hits.
On the day, McGahuey went 4-for-6 with two homers and five RBI, while Ferstle went 4-for-6 with two homeruns, a double and three RBI. Junior
Laura Villagrana went 4-for-7 with three runs scored, followed by Manno went 3-for-6 with three runs, a RBI and double.
The Titans continue their home stand and return to Horizon League play on Saturday when they host Cleveland State for a three-game set, beginning with Senior Day. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
