DETROIT (6/6/2016) -- University of Detroit Mercy midfielder
Kaitlyn Wandelt (Sayville, N.Y.) punctuated one of the best freshman seasons in Titan women's lacrosse history as she led all of NCAA Division I freshmen in several statistical categories at season's end.
Wandelt, the 2016 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, led all freshmen in goals (64), goals per game (3.20), free-position goals per game (0.95), points (75), points per game (3.75) and caused turnovers per game (1.50). She also ranked fourth in draw controls by a freshman in 2016.
Overall, the First Team All-Atlantic Sun recipient was fifth in the nation in free-position goals per game, seventh in the NCAA in goals and 12th in goals per game. She finished 22nd in points and 27th in draw controls per game. Wandelt was among the Atlantic Sun leaders in multiple categories throughout the year and broke school records for goals by a freshman and draw controls (73). Her 64 goals and 75 points both rank third all-time in single-season history.
Another freshman standout,
Lexie Kinmond (Peterborough, Ont. / Holy Cross Catholic), was fifth in the NCAA in free-position percentage (65.0) at the conclusion of the year. Freshman goalkeeper
Allison McDonough (Vero Beach, Fla.) was 23rd in the NCAA in total saves (138).
Detroit Mercy had four players in the top 100 in ground balls per game, as Wandelt (50th, 2.40), McDonough (72, 2.20), senior
Ally Shrader (89th, 2.11) and senior
Kylie Birney (91st, 2.10) all scooped up more than two ground balls per game.
As a team, the Titans were 15th in the country in ground balls per game (19.45) and 16th in the nation in free-position percentage (48.0). Detroit Mercy's 12.40 draw controls per contest were also 22nd in the NCAA, while its scoring offense of 11.75 goals per game was 28th out of 110 Division I squads.
