Titans Continue Road Swing At Bowling Green And Toledo

DETROIT (8/31/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team continues its four-game road swing this week, visiting Bowling Green State on Thursday, Sept. 1, and Toledo on Sunday, Sept. 4.
 
Both games will have live stats available at the links above. The Titans and Falcons will kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, while the Titans' match against the Rockets will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS
Bowling Green began the season with a pair of 1-0 wins over Eastern Illinois and Valparaiso, before falling to Morehead State and Oakland by 2-1 scores. The Falcons are outshooting opponents 70-28 and hold a 20-18 edge in corner kicks.
 
Erica Hubert leads the team with two goals on 21 shots, followed by Chelsee Washington with a goal and an assist on seven shots. Lauren Cadel has started all four games in net and is 2-2 with a 1.00 goals against average and .733 save percentage.

The Titans are 8-3 all-time against Bowling Green. Detroit Mercy has won the last four meetings with the Falcons and has scored 12 goals during the series win streak. The Titans downed BGSU 3-1 at Titan Field last fall, with Carley Rice and Phylisha Drayton picking up goals in the win.

SCOUTING THE ROCKETS
Toledo is 1-2 on the season with a 2-1 loss to Quinnipiac and a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Louisville. The Rockets defeated Wagner, 5-1, between the losses. Opponents hold a 40-30 edge in shots a 9-7 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Kelsey Kraft leads the team with five points on a pair of goals and an assist, while Kiersten Johnson has two goals and a team-high 11 shots. Katie Wilson has played every minute in goal and is 1-2 with a 2.33 goals against average and .611 save percentage.  

Detroit Mercy is 6-5 all-time against Toledo. The Rockets have won the last three meetings, including a 3-2 double overtime win at Titan Field last fall as Mindling registered a goal in the match.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Titans are in the midst of a four-game road trip after leaving the 2016 Texas Invitational with a 1-1 record last weekend. Detroit Mercy scored a pair of second-half goals to rally for a 2-1 win over Sam Houston State, before falling to the Longhorns, 3-1.
 
On the road trip, senior captain Anna Mindling scored a goal in each game, while junior Suzie Redick picked up an assist and the game-winner against the Bearkats.
 
LUPENEC ENTERS 24TH SEASON AS HEAD COACH
Detroit Mercy women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec enters his 24th season at the helm of the program. He's the only coach in the history of the program and entered the season as the Horizon League's active coaching leader in overall victories with 211.
 
Lupenec has guided the Titans to five Horizon League championship games, earning the tournament title in 2004 as the squad made its only appearance in the NCAA Tournament that year. Detroit has reached the Horizon League semifinals and maintained a .500 or better record in five of the last six years under Lupenec. At the beginning of the year, Lupenec entered with an 82-58-14 record all-time in Horizon League matches.
 
HORIZON LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL
The Titans were selected to finish seventh in the Horizon League women's soccer preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches. Detroit Mercy narrowly missed the HL Tournament a year ago, snapping a string of five straight seasons of postseason action.
 
Defending champion Oakland was picked to finish first, one point ahead of runner-up Milwaukee. Northern Kentucky was slated third, followed by Valparaiso and Wright State in a tie for fourth.

ON TAP
Following this weekend's action, the Titans return home to face Northwood on Sept. 8. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. from Titan Field and will be promoted as the Women's Soccer Raffle Game.
 
DETROIT MERCY QUICK NOTES
 
  • The Titans have posted .500 or better records in five of the last six seasons under Lupenec, who is the Horizon League's all-time active wins leader with 212. Lupenec, in his 24th season as head coach of Detroit Mercy, is 212-201-35 overall after the trip to Texas last week.  
  • The Titans have reached the Horizon League Tournament semifinals in five of the last six seasons, with the only miss coming in 2015. Detroit Mercy finished runners-up in 2014, falling to Valparaiso 1-0 in the HL Championship.
  • The Titans are 32-9-3 in home games since the beginning of the 2011 season. Detroit Mercy finished 7-3-1 from Titan Field in 2015. Defensively, the Titans have recorded 21 total shutouts in its last 31 matches at Titan Field dating back to 2012. Offensively in 2015, the Titans scored 20 of their 23 goals at home.
  • The Titans scored three goals on the road last season and have already matched that total through two road games in 2016.
  • Five Titans have played every minute so far this season: Manzo, DeLuca, Fiorido, LeAnnais and Tobin.
  • The Titans were picked to finish seventh in the 2016 Horizon League preseason poll after being chosen third and finishing seventh in 2015.
  • The Titans return All-Freshman Horizon League (2015) selection Molly Kane, as well two of its top point scorers from last fall in Anna Mindling (4 G, 4 A) and Phylisha Drayton (4 G, 1 A).
  • Seniors Anna Mindling and Kristen Tobin, along with junior Phylisha Drayton and sophomore Molly Kane were voted team captains for 2016.
  • Detroit Mercy returns 11 letter-winners from 2015, including seven starters. The Titans welcome eight newcomers in 2016, including two transfers.
  • The Titans played two exhibitions prior to the start of the regular season, opening play with a 3-1 win over Rochester College and a 2-0 loss to Central Michigan University.
  • The Titans missed the HL Playoffs in 2015, snapping a streak of five consecutive seasons of postseason action.
  • Detroit Mercy's 2015 team awards were given to Alyssa Lotito (Team MVP, Co-Offensive Player of the Year), Jenifer Borawski (Coaches Award), Anna Mindling (Co-Offensive Player of the Year), Tatum Zurawski (Co-Defensive Player of the Year) and Molly Kane (Co-Defensive Player of the Year).
  • The Titans earned the NSCAA 2014-15 Team Academic Award with a 3.70 GPA, the fourth-highest mark in the nation. Detroit Mercy has received the accolade three times in the last five years.
