DETROIT (1/14/2017) -- Several standout performances highlighted a strong day for the University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team with the Titans hosting their annual Titan Fencing Invitational at Calihan Hall on Saturday. The Titans went 4-2 as a squad, going head-to-head with the six other men's teams in attendance.
The Titans earned victories over Toledo (19-8), Wayne State (15-12), Michigan State (19-8) and Denison (17-10). Detroit Mercy was just one bout from earning another victory, but dropped a narrow 14-13 matchup with Cleveland State. The Titans also dropped its head-to-head with Michigan by a 17-10 margin.
Six Titan fencers recorded double-digit victories during the competition, led by sophomore foilist
Algird Szumlas, who went a perfect 13-0 in his bouts. Freshman
Tahj Butler picked up 13 victories in the epee for the Titans and senior
Aaron Dittel recorded double-digit wins in the epee, posting a mark of 10-4. In the sabre, freshman
Wiley Dressell was 11-5 and senior captain
Austin Carlisle earned a record of 10-5. Sophomore foilist
Josh Blackburn also earned 11 wins for the Titans as the sixth member with 10 or more bout triumphs on Saturday.
The Titan men's foil squad dropped just one matchup all day, winning five-straight as a weapon after going 4-5 against Toledo in the opening match of the day. Also in the foil,
Mikael Paulik had a mark of 5-4 and
Christopher Morrison (two victories) and
Ethan Powers (one win) also tallied wins for the Titans.
The men's sabre team dropped just two head-to-heads as a weapon, going 4-2 overall. Newcomers
Joshua Sexton (four victories) and
John Engelman (two wins) had strong days for the Titans in the sabre.
In the epee,
Thomas Borden picked up four victories on the afternoon, including two over Denison.
Josef Provido added another bout win for Detroit Mercy in the epee.
