CLEVELAND, Ohio (1/23/2017) -- Freshman
Wiley Dressell notched an 11-3 record Saturday to help lead the University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team at the Cleveland State Duals on Saturday. Dressell was part of a sabre squad that earned 24 triumphs overall.
Dressell earned 3-0 marks against both Vassar and Cleveland State, while going 2-0 against Case Western Reserve. As a team, the Titans finished 1-4, falling against Vassar (6-21), Case Western Reserve (11-16), Michigan (12-15) and Cleveland State (13-14). Detroit Mercy earned a 16-11 victory over McKendree.
Senior captain
Austin Carlisle earned a mark of 9-4, while
John Engelman picked up three victories and
Joshua Sexton earned another in the sabre for the Titans. As a weapon, the men's sabre team earned wins over CSU (7-2), McKendree (5-4) and CWR (5-4), while narrowly falling to Vassar (4-5).
Senior
Aaron Dittel went 7-5 in the epee to lead the Titans, while freshman
Tahj Butler earned six victories for Detroit Mercy.
Thomas Borden and
Josef Provido each earned bout victories in the weapon for Detroit Mercy.
In the foil, sophomores
Algird Szumlas and
Josh Blackburn combined for nine victories. Szumlas was 4-2 on the day, while Blackburn picked up five more wins.
Mikael Paulik picked up another victory in the foil for the Titans.
Detroit Mercy returns to competition on Saturday, Jan. 28, traveling to Notre Dame for the DeCicco Duals in South Bend, Ind.
