SOUTH BEND, Ind. (1/30/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team earned a 2-1 record over the weekend at the DeCicco Duals, hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend.
The Titans earned victories over Lawrence (15-12) and Florida (21-6), while falling to the host Fighting Irish, 23-4. The Titan men's fencing foil and sabre squads each earned 15 victories as a team to help secure the match wins, while the epee squad went 6-3 against Florida.
The men's foil team picked up three of the four victories against Notre Dame, a team that is currently ranked No. 4 in the country in the most recent CollegeFencing360.com men's coaches poll. Sophomore
Josh Blackburn picked up two wins against the Fighting Irish and finished the day with a 6-3 record overall. Classmate
Algird Szumlas earned a win against Notre Dame and had the most wins for the Titans on Saturday, finishing 7-2.
In the sabre, senior captain
Austin Carlisle and freshman
Wiley Dressell each had marks of 6-3, with Carlisle earning a win against Notre Dame and Dressell going 3-0 against both Lawrence and Florida.
Joshua Sexton earned two more victories with
John Engelman earning another for Detroit Mercy in the sabre.
Senior
Aaron Dittel led the Titans in the epee, posting a 6-3 mark with two, 3-0 efforts against both Lawrence and Florida. Freshman
Tahj Butler added three more victories in the epee, while junior
Thomas Borden added another for the Titans.
Also in the foil,
Mikael Paulik and
Christopher Morrison each earned bout triumphs for Detroit Mercy.
