Titan Trio Medal at Wayne State's Danosi Open

DETROIT (12/3/2017) -- Junior foilist Algird Szumlas won the men's foil competition for the third-straight year at Wayne State's annual Istvan Danosi Open and three University of Detroit Mercy men's fencers medaled at the individual event on Sunday.

Sophomore Wiley Dressell placed second to Wayne State All-American Ziad Elsissy in the sabre competition, earning his second medal at the Danosi Open, while sophomore Tahj Butler earned a bronze medal in the epee for the Titans.

Szumlas went 5-0 in pool play bouts and earned the foil title as the No. 1 seed, winning four-straight direct elimination bouts. He topped the No. 2 seed, Michigan's Michael Soukar in the championship bout, 15-10.

Dressell fenced to a 4-0 mark in pool bouts earning the No. 2 seed in the bracket competition. He won two consecutive bouts before meeting top-seeded Elsissy in the championship and falling 15-5.

Butler also went unbeaten in pool play bouts, going 4-0 to share the top seed entering direct elimination bouts. He won his first two bouts in the DE before dropping a 15-12 bout in the semifinals against Wayne State's Henry Kisthardt, who would go on the win.

Also in the sabre, junior Joshua Sexton went 4-2 in pools to earn the No. 4 seed. He dropped a quarterfinal bout 15-13 with Western Ontario's Mitchell Travis to place fifth overall. Senior John Engelman went 3-3 in pool play and placed ninth in the sabre for Detroit Mercy.

Junior Josh Blackburn and sophomore Ethan Powers also placed in the top 10 in the foil for Detroit Mercy, with Blackburn going 2-2 in pool play before placing eighth overall. Powers was 10th and also picked up two pool-play victories for the Titans. Senior Mikael Paulik also placed 12th in the foil.

In the epee, senior Thomas Borden placed 10th, going 3-1 in pool play before dropping a bout in the round of 16. Christopher Morrison tied for 15th in the epee for the Titans.

The Titans are off until after the holidays, next hosting their 2018 Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational at Calihan Hall on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 9 a.m.
