DETROIT (2/13/2017) -- Several Titans recorded good marks Saturday at the Wayne State University Duals, held at the Matthaei Center on WSU's campus in downtown Detroit. The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing squad earned a 2-2 mark overall as a team on the day.
Detroit Mercy earned victories over Michigan State (22-5) and Oakland (23-4), while falling against No. 1-ranked Ohio State (17-10) and Wayne State (18-9).
Against the top-ranked Buckeyes, foilistÂ
Algird Szumlas earned a 3-0 mark, while freshman
Wiley Dressell (sabre) and senior
Aaron Dittel (epee) each earned 2-1 marks. It was a strong showing for the Titans against a formidable opponent in their conference.
On the day, Szumlas went a perfect 5-0, while Dressell recorded a mark of 5-1. Dittel led all Detroit Mercy fencers with nine bout wins, earning a 9-3 record.
Also in the epee, senior
Josef Provido was 5-7, freshman
Tahj Butler went 3-2 and junior
Thomas Borden earned three more victories. In the sabre, senior
Austin Carlisle was 5-2, sophomore
Joshua Sexton went 5-4 and junior
John Engelman earned three bout victories.
Junior
Mikael Paulik earned four wins in the foil for the Titans and sophomore
Josh Blackburn and freshman
Ethan Powers both had two victories on the day.
Several Titan men's fencers head to the USA Fencing Junior Olympics next weekend from Kansas City, Mo. before Detroit Mercy competes in full as a team at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships from Feb. 25-26 in Columbus, Ohio.
