INDIANAPOLIS (2/27/2017) -- University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball junior
Brianne Cohen (Toronto, Ont. / York Memorial) has been named the final Horizon League Player of the Week for the 2016-17 regular season, it was announced Monday afternoon.
It's the first honor for Cohen this season and second career Horizon League weekly honor.
Cohen shot 79.3 percent (23-for-29) and led the Titans with an 18.7 points per game average last week as Detroit Mercy earned two victories in the final week of the regular season. Cohen scored in double figures in all three games last week, missing just six shots total. She reached the 1,000-point milestone in the regular-season finale at Youngstown State on Saturday, becoming the 21st player in school history to reach the plateau.
The HL leader in field-goal percentage at 60.5 percent, Cohen went 8-for-8 against Wright State, scoring a team-high 20 points. Against Cleveland State, Cohen had 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and finished up the week with 17 points, going 7-for-11 from the floor at YSU. She added six blocks in three games on the defensive end.
On the season, the junior ranks second on the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game and first in blocks with 27. Cohen finished the regular season with 12-straight double-digit scoring efforts, including four 20-point games. In Horizon League contests, Cohen sank 65.0 percent of her shots and was sixth in the conference in scoring at 16.3 points per game and blocks at 1.1 per contest. She ranks 12th in the nation in field goal percentage following the weekend.
The Titans are busy preparing for the upcoming Motor City Madness basketball tournament. Detroit Mercy is the No. 3 seed in the bracket and plays sixth-seeded Cleveland State in the third day of the tournament on Sunday, March 5 at Noon from Joe Louis Arena.
