The Golden Grizzlies and Titans will compete in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, men's and women's track and field.
The winner of each competition will be awarded two points, with cross country, golf and track and field being decided by the highest finish at the Hl Championships. The school with the most points at the end of the season will be awarded the Metro Cup.Â
Last season, Oakland took the Metro Cup by a score of 27-5, but so far this year, the series is tied at 6-6 with the Titans collecting wins in women's soccer and men's and women's basketball.
SWEET DOO!
The No. 42 jersey of Terry Duerod will finally hang from the rafters at Calihan Hall.
Duerod is the seventh player to have his jersey retired following Bob Calihan, Dave DeBusschere, Spencer Haywood, John Long, Rashad Phillips and Terry Tyler.
Duerod ranks sixth in school history with 1,690 points and was a part of two of the best teams in school history in the 1976-77 Sweet Sixteen squad and the 1977-78 NIT team, both which posted a school record 25 wins.
As a senior, he was tabbed an All-American after tallying 23.3 points, which is still ninth in school history.Â
He is known as one of the best pure shooters in Titan history and his 790 career field goals is third in the record books.Â
His 47 points against CCNY on Feb. 10, 1979, remains the second-best single game performance by any Titan.
He was selected by the Pistons in the third round of the 1979 NBA draft and played five seasons in the NBA earning a championship ring with the Boston Celtics in 1981.Â
After playing overseas for a couple of years, he retired and became a Detroit firefighter for 27 years, retiring from that position in 2016.Â
1976-77 40-YEAR CELEBRATIONÂ
The 2016-17 season marks the 40th year of the Titans run to the Sweet Sixteen.
Dick Vitale was in his fourth and final year as the head coach as the Titans posted a 25-4 campaign, the most wins in school history at that time and still tied for first today.Â
The Titans set a school record with 21 straight victories, including a legendary triumph on the road at Marquette, the eventual national champions that season winning on Dennis Boyd's jumper from the top of the key just before time expired.
In the NCAA Tournament, the Titans downed Middle Tennessee State, 93-76, in the first round to set up a meeting with Michigan.
In the Sweet Sixteen, the Wolverines jumped out to an early lead in an 86-81 win.
The 1976-77 team featured some of the best players in school history in future NBA players and draft selections John Long, Terry Tyler, Terry Duerod, Ron Bostick and Dennis Boyd.Â
