SAN DIEGO, Calif. (3/4/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped a pair of contests against UC Davis and San Jose State on day two of the San Diego Classic.
The Titans dropped the opener against the Aggies, 8-1, before suffering a late 9-4 loss to the Spartans. Detroit Mercy picked up 12 hits on the day and pushed five runs across, but could not keep the opposition at bay in a pair of defeats.
GAME ONE: UC DAVIS 8 – DETROIT MERCY 1
The Aggies led off the bottom of the first with a pair of bunt singles and put pressure on the Titans immediately. UC Davis would go on to score four runs in the frame and take the early edge over Detroit Mercy.
Courtney Gilbert led off the second with a single to left and advanced to third as Manno reached on an error. With runners on the corners,
Kara Vitale singled to center to cut the lead to 4-1. The threat would end abruptly to strand two runners on base.
In the bottom of the second, the Aggies carried the momentum over to pick up four hits and push three runs across the plate. UC Davis added a run in the fourth and kept the Titan bats at bay to pick up the 8-1 win.
Villagrana and Gilbert each picked up two hits in the defeat. The Titans' fifth hit came on Vitale's RBI single in the second.
GAME TWO: SAN JOSE STATE 9 – DETROIT MERCY 4
The Titans held a one-run lead into the fourth inning before San Jose State rallied to tie the game. After evening the score at 1-1, the Spartans exploded for eight runs in the fifth to surge ahead, 9-3.
Detroit Mercy responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Titans would get no closer as San Jose State earned the victory.
Sydney Pollock went 3-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and a stolen base to lead the Titan offense. Junior
Savvy Ferstle went 2-for-3 with a RBI in the defeat.
Sophomore
Ashley Mauser was strong on the mound for much of the game before running into trouble in the fifth. She was handed the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) in 6.1 innings pitched.
ON DECK
The Titans return to action with another tough game on Sunday against Oregon State. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m. EST.
