SAN DIEGO, Calif. (3/7/17) – Despite an early lead, the University of Detroit Mercy softball team couldn't keep the Aztecs at bay as San Diego State pulled away late for a 5-2 win on Tuesday night.
The Titans scored a run in each of the first two innings as Detroit Mercy took an early 2-0 edge. After reaching on a walk,
Jordan Manno caused havoc on the base paths and scored in the opening frame. Senior
Alyssa James smoked a RBI double in the top of the second to increase the lead to two.
In the bottom of the second, San Diego State scored three runs to surge ahead, 3-2. Sophomore
Ashley Mauser nearly pitched out of the inning, but the Aztecs scored a pair of runs with two outs.
After a pair of scoreless frames, the Aztecs tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
The Titans threatened in the sixth as
Sydney Pollock and
Edrienne Williams singled, but the runners would be stranded on base.
Detroit Mercy picked up four hits in the defeat. Mauser got the start and allowed three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Liz Murphy came on in relief and allowed two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Titans close out the California trip with a single game against San Diego on Wednesday. The finale is set to begin at 4 p.m. EST from the USD Softball Complex.
