NOTRE DAME, Ind. (4/11/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team fell on the road to Notre Dame, 10-5, on Tuesday night from Melissa Cook Stadium.
Junior
Savvy Ferstle extended her hitting streak to 11 games after going 2-for-4, with six Titans picking up hits in the game.
Sophomore
Courtney Gilbert went 3-for-4 with two RBI and classmate
Jordan Manno reached base three times after going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and a RBI.
Senior
Laura Villagrana was 1-for-3 from the plate with a walk and a run scored,
Cheyenne Willeford went 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored and
Alyssa James went 1-for-4 to cap the top offensive performers for Detroit Mercy.
The Titans fell in a hole early as the Irish pushed seven runs across in the bottom of the first. Notre Dame added two more in the bottom of the second, before Detroit Mercy answered with a pair in the top of the third.
Three walks and a pair of singles from Villagrana and Gilbert plated two runs for the Titans, but a strikeout and a double play ended the threat in the third inning.
The Titans and Irish traded runs in the fourth and fifth innings, before Detroit Mercy added two runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 10-5.
The Titans outscored the Irish 5-1 after the first inning as freshmen
Liz Murphy and
Ellie Boteler settled in from the circle. Murphy threw four innings while conceding two earned runs and Boteler tossed two scoreless frames to end the game.
Detroit Mercy returns to Horizon League action this weekend on the road at Green Bay. The Titans and Phoenix begin a three-game set on Friday, Apr. 14, and wrap up with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 15.
