DETROIT (5/7/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped a doubleheader against Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon from Buysse Ballpark.
The Penguins earned wins of 6-2 and 12-2 in the regular season finale for both squads and the home finale for Detroit Mercy.
Sophomore
Jordan Manno picked up a hit in each game to extend her hitting streak to 14 games and reached-base streak to 26 games. Manno went 2-for-6 with a walk, stolen base and a run scored.
Courtney Gilbert reached base three times, going 2-for-5 on the day with a walk, stolen base and two runs scored. Savvy Fersetle picked up three RBI, two coming via the long ball with a two-run shot in the opener.
The Titans finish the regular season with a 12-10 Horizon League record, the second-most conference wins in the program's history and just one shy of the 2006 squad's high-water mark of 13.
Detroit Mercy earned the No. 5 seed in the Horizon League Tournament and will play in the first round against No. 4 Wright State on Wednesday at 1 p.m. EST, from No. 1 seed and host UIC in Chicago, Ill.
The tournament berth is the first for the program since 2009.
GAME ONE: YSU 6 – DETROIT MERCY 2
After a clean first, the Penguins scored a pair of runs in the second on two bases-loaded walks. YSU pushed the lead to six after a pair of hits and a Titan error allowed four runners to cross in the top of the third.
The Titans got a couple back as Ferstle launched a two-run shot over the left-center fence in the sixth, but it would be all the offense Detroit Mercy would muster as the Penguins hung on for the 6-2 win.
Freshman
Ellie Boteler was strong in relief, tossing 4.2 shutout innings with three strikeouts. Boteler allowed just two base runners on one hit and a walk.
GAME TWO: YSU 12 – DETROIT MERCY 2
Detroit Mercy struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles by Manno and Gilbert put runners on and the pair stole second and third to put runners in scoring position for Ferstle, who lined out to right to bring across the first run. Senior
Alyssa James followed with a double to right center as the Titans went up, 2-0.
From there, it was all YSU as the Penguins picked up 12 runs on 17 hits over the final five innings.
Gilbert and Boteler each picked up two hits in the defeat.
ON DECK
The Titans return to action at the HL Tournament at UIC on Wednesday. Detroit Mercy will face Wright State at 1 p.m. EST in Chicago, Ill.
