CLEVELAND, Ohio (1/22/2018) -- Sophomore
Tahj Butler and junior
Algird Szumlas each went 9-1 on Saturday, Jan. 20 and the University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team earned a 4-1 team mark at the Cleveland State Duals, held in Cleveland, Ohio.
As a squad, the Titans earned wins over Denison (16-11), Cleveland State (19-8), Indiana (20-7) and Case Western Reserve (15-12). Detroit Mercy's only setback was a 22-5 defeat to the University of Michigan.
Szumlas went 9-1 in the foil with teammate, junior foilist
Josh Blackburn also recording a 7-3 mark. Senior
Mikael Paulik also went 4-4 in foil for the Titans with the men's foil squad earning 21 bout wins to lead the team overall. Szumlas went 3-0 against Case Western Reserve and both Szumlas and Blackburn had 2-0 marks against Indiana and Denison.
Butler led epee with a 9-1 record, going 3-0 against both Case Western Reserve and Cleveland State. Sophomore
Christopher Morrison added five bout victories, picking up three victories against Denison, while senior
Thomas Borden had two victories for the Titans in epee.
In sabre, junior
Joshua Sexton led the squad with a 7-7 mark, while senior
John Engelman picked up six victories. Sophomore
Wiley Dressell went 3-2 on the day in sabre for Detroit Mercy.
Detroit Mercy has performed well so far this season, going 7-2 overall in the past two weekends including its 3-1 day at the Detroit Mercy Invitational on Jan. 13.
The Titans are back in action next weekend, Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Notre Dame DeCicco Duals in South Bend, Ind.
