Algird Szumlas and sophomore
Wiley Dressell each tallied seven victories, while sophomore
Tahj Butler went 6-2 in epee as the University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team competed at Notre Dame's DeCicco Duals on Saturday.
Detroit Mercy went 1-3 as a team against some top-ranked competition. The Titans went against two of the Top 20 teams in the nation, No. 18-ranked Wayne State and No. 1 Notre Dame. The Titans topped Northwestern, 14-13, while dropping match-ups to WSU (15-12) and Notre Dame (25-2).
The red, white and blue also narrowly lost to the University of Florida by just one bout, 14-13.
Butler had a 6-2 mark in epee for the Titans, recording two victories against Wayne State, Notre Dame and Northwestern. Dressell (sabre) and Szumlas (foil) each went 7-4 for Detroit Mercy. Dressell and Szumlas went 7-1 combined against Wayne State, Florida and Northwestern.

Josh Blackburn and sophomore
Ethan Powers each went 3-6. In sabre, senior
John Engelman and junior Josh Sexton both went 3-7 with Sexton picking up two victories against Northwestern. In epee,
Christopher Morrison added two bout triumphs for the Titans, while seniors
Thomas Borden (epee) and
Mikael Paulik (foil) each notched one victory on the day.
