DETROIT (10/3/18) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team showed their academic excellence throughout the 2017-18 school year by earning the ninth highest team GPA in NCAA Division I softball, the NFCA announced Tuesday afternoon.
The
National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) recognizes the top 10 academic teams (by overall GPA) each fall through the Easton/
NFCA Top 10 Academic Team program. The Titans carried a 3.571 GPA throughout the school year, earning them ninth among all eligible institutions.
The red, white and blue were one of two teams representing the Horizon League on the list, with the other being Northern Kentucky.
After accounting for 25 percent of the HL All-Academic team, they continued their success off the field, with 13 Titans carrying a 3.50 GPA or higher in all different fields, including: psychology, nursing, business, biology, pre-law, criminal justice and social work.
When asked about his team's academic success, head coach
John Conway said, "This is a tremendous accomplishment for our team. This is a tough academic institution, and for us to show character not only on the field, but off of it as well is great to see. To compete at the highest level by playing a Division 1 sport and also thrive off the field is something that is hard to find, and for our whole team to be committed to that and have that work ethic is wonderful."
