Women's Basketball Hosts Western Michigan on Sunday

DETROIT (12/7/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball squad returns to action Sunday afternoon, hosting Western Michigan for a 1 p.m. contest from Calihan Hall. The Titans are in the middle of a stretch against Mid-American Conference foes. It's also the final non-conference home game for the red, white and blue.

It's CYO Day from Calihan Hall as well as $1 Sunday with admission into the game just a buck as well as $1 hot dogs and fountain drinks at the concession stand. The game may also be seen live via ESPN-Plus for a small monthly subscription fee with the Voice of the Titans Denny Kapp calling all of the action.

Quick Hits
• Detroit Mercy and Western Michigan are meeting for the 33rd time in women's basketball. The Titans are 14-18 all-time against WMU and haven't won against the Broncos since 2012.

• The Titans have recorded 25 steals in the past two games, including 16 against Omaha at home, which was the most in a game since 2009. Detroit Mercy is third in the Horizon League in steals per game (8.0) as a squad.

• Titan freshman Paige Bellman leads the Horizon League in steals per game (2.4) and total steals (19). She has six games of multiple steals. She set a career-high in points at Eastern Michigan, scoring 14, while adding six boards and four steals.

• Freshman Jess Bicknell also scored in double figures for the third time in her rookie campaign, establishing a new career-best with 15 points. She has led the Titans in scoring twice.

Last Time Out
The Titans battled back-and-forth with Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, ultimately falling on the road in the final minutes by a 60-53 margin. Detroit Mercy freshmen Jess Bicknell and Paige Bellman both set new career-highs in points with 15 and 14, respectively.

The Titans used an 11-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead and led after three quarters, 43-37, at EMU. Detroit Mercy sank three 3-pointers during the run -- one by Lexey Tobel and the final two by Bellman, who drilled a career-high four 3-pointers in the contest.

Detroit Mercy had nine more steals as Bellman and classmate Sophia DiMilia both had four steals in the contest. It was Bellman's sixth game of multiple steals this season. Bicknell scored in double figures for the third time in the past five games, making her first collegiate start for the Titans.

Titan Thievery
The Titans have 25 steals in the past two games -- swiping 16 against Omaha at home and then netting nine more steals against Eastern Michigan on Dec. 5. Detroit Mercy has tallied four games of nine or more steals through eight games this season:

    16 -- vs. Omaha (Nov. 29, 2018)
    11 -- at Loyola (Nov. 12, 2018)
    10 -- at Manhattan (Nov. 24, 2018)
    9 -- at Eastern Michigan (Dec. 5, 2018)

Paige Bellman leads the Titans and the Horizon League in steals with 19, while teammate Zoey Oatis has 12 steals, including a career-best five against Omaha. Sophia DiMilia is averaging 1.5 steals per game and Lexey Tobel and Jess Bicknell each had seven steals.

Scouting Western Michigan
Western Michigan is 2-4 on the season and coming off a 64-53 loss to Loyola (Ill.) at home on Monday. The Broncos have played just one road game this season, falling at Mississippi, 69-66. WMU also fell to another common Titan opponent -- Michigan -- by a 79-42 margin.

Deja Wimby leads the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game, while Leighah-Amori Wool averages 11.8 points and a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game. Meredith Miller leads the squad with 10 triples. Wimby also has 16 steals in four contests (4.0 per game).

WMU shoots 27 triples a game and has made 6.1 per contest. The Broncos have five players who average better than 5.0 rebounds per game.

Series History
The Titans and Western Michigan are meeting for the 33rd time in women's basketball with Detroit Mercy trailing in the all-time series, 14-18. The Titans' last victory over WMU came at home in 2012. Detroit Mercy is 9-7 in home games against the Broncos. The two teams have played in each of the past eight seasons entering Sunday's contest with WMU winning each of the past five meetings.
