HAMMOND, La. (2/17/18) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team earned a hard-fought victory and suffered a tough loss on day one of its trip down to Hammond, Louisiana.
The Titans opened up with an extra-inning victory against Texas A&M Corpus Christi and finished their doubleheader against Omaha in another extra-inning affair.
Sophomore
Liz Murphy would pitch an eight-inning complete game for the win in game one and
Ashley Mauser would pitch seven innings in the nightcap.
On the day,
Savvy Ferstle had two hits, a homer and two RBI.
Sydney Pollock scored one run with two hits and two RBI and
Kori Keyes had a pair of hits, two runs scored and a walk.
Detroit Mercy 2 - Corpus Christi 1
Game one was a pitching duel between the Titans' Murphy and Kennedy Johnson of the Islanders. Murphy would continue her strong start to the season by pitching a complete game in which she went eight innings, scattering seven hits, one unearned run, walking one and striking out three. That win would improve her record to 2-0 on the season.
It was 0-0 when Corpus Christi would finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring on a Titan fielding error. However, the Titans would have a short memory span and would bounce back immediately in the top of the seventh.
Ferstle would single into left field to lead off the inning. That would be followed by a walk from
Kara Vitale and a single to left field by
Skylar Fairchild, loading the bases.
The Titans would attempt a squeeze, but Ferstle would be thrown out at home, leaving the bases loaded and the Titans trailing.
Head coach
John Conway would then make the call to pinch hit
Alyssa Lang and it would prove to be the correct decision as Lang singled up the middle into center field, tying the game at 1-1.
Murphy was able to hold off the Islanders in the bottom of the seventh, sending the Titans to their second extra-innings game of the season.
In the eighth with one out,
Courtney Gilbert drilled a double into the left-field gap, which would see Pollock advance all the way around from first base, scoring the eventual winning run for the Titans.
With the red, white and blue now leading for the first time in the game, Murphy would head back out onto the mound to finish her game. The Islanders would automatically place a runner on second thanks to the international tiebreaker rule.
The runner would advance to third on a single, but would be thrown out at home on a fielder's choice, maintaining the narrow Titan lead, but leaving runners on first and second.
The bases would then be loaded off of a single to left field. Murphy would go into full lockdown mode, striking out the next batter and causing a pop up to second base, securing the comeback and the Titans third victory of the season.
Detroit Mercy 5 - Omaha 6
Both teams bats came alive in the second game right from the start. The Titans would fall behind 2-0 in the top of the first, but that would not last long.
Gilbert would reach on an error in the bottom of the first and Ferstle would make them pay, hitting a two-run shot over the left field fence tying the game at 2-2.
The red, white and blue would jump out ahead in the bottom of the second inning as Fairchild and Keyes had back-to-back singles. The bases would then be loaded as
Elizabeth Yager reached on a fielder's choice and
Jordan Manno singled in a run with a hit to left field.
With the bases still loaded, Pollock worked a walk to send in another run for a 4-2 lead.
Omaha would answer right back with a pair of runs in the top of the third to square the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Titans reclaimed the lead as Pollock brought home Keyes on a RBI double.
Omaha tied the game in the seventh and after the red, white and could not push home a run in the bottom of the frame, the Titans went to extra-innings for the second time on the day.
The Mavericks were able to plate a run in the eighth and the Titans could not get the tying hit with a runner in scoring position in the bottom half.
Mauser went seven innings in the contest allowing seven hits, six runs (five earned) with three strikeouts across.
ON DECK
The Titans have a pair of games tomorrow as they take on Belmont and Southeastern Louisiana. After they conclude action down in Louisiana, Detroit Mercy will take a week off before heading down to Georgia for an eight-game stint over spring break.
