HAMMOND, La. (2/18/18) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team finished up their down south with a pair of games on Sunday afternoon.
The Titans faced off against the Bruins of Belmont and the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana down in Hammond, Louisiana, falling in both contests.Â
On the day,
Jordan Manno had one run scored, two hits and a RBI, while
Kori Keyes had two hits and one run scored.
Savvy Ferstle had three hits,
Maddy Scarsella a hit and a RBI, and
Courtney Gilbert had one run, one hit and two walks.
Belmont 8 - Detroit Mercy 4
The Titans would open Sunday's action with a game against Belmont University.
The Bruins would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and opened a 6-0 lead after two innings.
The Titans - as they have done all season - would chip away at the lead with a Scarsella RBI single in the top of the fourth, driving in
Skylar Fairchild and cutting the deficit to 6-1.
The red, white and blue was down 8-1 in the sixth when they started another comeback attempt. Manno doubled to right field driving in two runs and cutting the deficit to 8-3 headed into the final inning.
The Titans would tack on another unearned run in the top of the seventh as
Courtney Gilbert scored on a fielder's choice, but they could not get any closer.Â
Southeastern Louisiana 2 - Detroit Mercy 1
The Titans took on the host team in game two squaring off with Southeastern Louisiana.
Ashley Mauser would head to the mound for the red, white and blue pitching five innings, scattering two hits, two walks, two runs (one earned) and striking out three.Â
The Titans would fall behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning off of an RBI triple down the right-field line. The Lions would double their lead in the bottom of the third, 2-0.
The red, white and blue would begin to piece together a rally in the top of the sixth as Keyes singled into right field and went to second on a throwing error, which allowed Manno to score to pull the team within 2-1.Â
Regan Glenn would enter the game for the Titans replacing Mauser on the mound and would shut down the Lions in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Titans one last opportunity to complete the comeback.
Fairchild worked a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch, but the Titans' rally would ultimately fall short.Â
ON DECK
Detroit Mercy will now take a week off before heading down to Georgia for an eight-game stint over spring break.
