Titans Upset Bid Foiled By Late Georgia Tech Comeback

ATLANTA, Ga. (3/4/18) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team reached the midway point of their spring break trip with a game against Georgia Tech University on Sunday afternoon.

The Titans were looking for the upset of an ACC opponent, and nearly found it, but came up just short after the Yellow Jackets rallied late in the game.

Kori Keyes had a great day at the plate, garnering two hits, two RBI and scoring two runs for the red, white and blue. Also having a solid day at the plate was Courtney Gilbert with one hit, one RBI and two runs scored and Savvy Ferstle and Elizabeth Yager each collected a pair of hits.

The Titans came out with hitting on the brain. Jordan Manno would reach on a fielding error, and Keyes would punish them for the mistake. She would slug a homer over the left field fence, her first as a Titan, giving the Titans an early 2-0 lead.

Gilbert and Skylar Fairchild would then draw back-to-back walks, followed by a single through the right side from Sydney Pollock, loading the bases. Alyssa Lang would remain patient in the batter's box and draw a walk, extending the Titans lead to 3-0.

Keyes would again start a Titan surge in the second inning, this time by drawing a walk. Gilbert would follow that up with a double to left center, bringing Keyes all the way around the bases and giving the Titans a 4-0 lead.

Gilbert would then come around to score after advancing to third on a fielder's choice and heading home on a fielding error, making her run unearned, but giving the Titans a 5-0 lead after just two innings.

The Ramblin' Wreck would get one back in the bottom of the second to cut their deficit to 5-1, and both teams would fail to score in the third inning, leaving the score at 5-1 heading into the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets' bats would come alive, as they scored three runs and cut their deficit to just one, 5-4.

The red, white and blue would answer with one in the top of the fifth. Pollock would reach on a fielding error, followed by a single through the left side by Maddy Scarsella. Yager would then single, loading the bases for the second time in the game. Manno would draw a walk, driving in the run, but the Titans would be unable to execute beyond that one run, giving them a 6-4 lead after five.

The Yellow Jackets would explode for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a lead for the first time in the game, 8-6. The Titans were unable to rally in the top of the seventh, and fell in a close matchup, by a score of 8-6.

Liz Murphy got the start on the mound for the Titans, going 4.1 innings, while surrendering five hits, and four runs (two earned). Ashley Mauser would enter in relief, scattering four hits and four earned runs across 1.2 innings pitched, giving her the loss on the day.
