Mauser Pitches Complete Game Shutout, Titans Blank Wright State in Series Opener

DETROIT (4/6/18) – Junior Ashley Mauser fired a five-hit shutout and the University of Detroit Mercy softball team took game one of a three-game series over Wright State, 3-0, on Friday afternoon from Buysse Ballpark.

Mauser pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 10 and scattering five hits as the Titan defense flashed leather behind her on a brisk and windy day from the Motor City.

At the plate, junior Kori Keyes led the offense with a pair of doubles and an RBI in three at bats, while classmate Jordan Manno went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The Titans threatened in the bottom of the first when Courtney Gilbert led off with a four pitch walk and Keyes doubled into right center to put two runners in scoring position, but they were unable to capitalize.

In the bottom of the third, Manno would hit a sharp double down the left field line, which would be followed by a walk from Savvy Ferstle. Keyes would step into the batter's box and capitalize, driving a double down the left field line and into the corner, scoring Manno and giving the Titans the lead, 1-0.

That would bring up freshman Alyssa Lang, who would hit a ground ball to the pitcher, but it was bobbled and she would beat the throw out at first, and Ferstle would score, extending the Titans lead to 2-0.

Freshman Maddy Scarsella laid out for a highlight reel catch on a sinking liner to end the top of the fourth, before tattooing her first career homer to left center to lead off the bottom of the frame, giving Detroit Mercy a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Wright State had the tying run at the plate with runners on the corners, but Mauser got the groundout to shortstop and the Titans walked away victorious, 3-0.

The Titans earned the win over the reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, collecting four hits and a pair of walks against Ashley Sharp. The Raiders' hurler allowed three runs across six innings of work.

Detroit Mercy improves to 4-3 in Horizon League play with the win, while Wright State falls to 4-5 in conference action.
