DETROIT, MI. (5/2/18) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team upset Western Michigan in their home finale on Tuesday afternoon.
Western Michigan was coming fresh off of a strong 8-2 win against the University of Michigan on May 1, but the Titans were unfazed by the Broncos previous accomplishments.
First-year pitcher
Lindsay Brandon claimed the win for the Titans, going four innings while scattering six hits, two earned runs and one strikeout.
Brandon was assisted by
Regan Glenn who tossed one inning, surrendering one hit and one walk, and
Ashley Mauser, who successfully closed the game out, tossing two innings while scattering two hits, two walks and one strikeout.
The Titans offense was spearheaded by
Kara Vitale and
Kori Keyes, who both knocked a home run during the game, accounting for three of the four RBI for the Titans.

The Titans got off to a hot start, when in the top of the first inning, Vitale crushed a two-run bomb over the left center field fence, driving in
Courtney Gilbert, who had singled up the middle to reach base safely.
With a 2-0 lead on the board, the Titans looked to sharpen their defensive effort and did so, only allowing two runs in the game.
The Broncos tacked on one run in the top of the second, making it 2-1, but the red, white and blue never trailed in the game.
In the bottom of the second inning,
Alyssa Lang led off with a double off the wall in left center field, leaving her in scoring position with no outs.
Elizabeth Yager then capitalized on the opportunity, hitting a chop single up the middle and driving in Lang, extending the lead to 3-1.
Western again tried to claw back into the game in the top of the fourth, cutting their deficit to a mere 3-2, but Keyes had a different idea in mind.
When she stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning, she tattooed the ball over the left center field fence, making the score 4-2 and giving Mauser the insurance run she was looking for from the circle.
The Broncos loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Mauser kept her cool and got a line out to Gilbert at short to end the game and secure a 4-2 victory for the red, white and blue.
