INDIANAPOLIS (6/28/2018) -- Eighty-one University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes were recognized on the 2018 Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll with the league office releasing the accolades for the spring semester on Thursday.
The Titans' 81 honorees was up from 79 in the fall. Detroit Mercy ranked eighth in the Horizon League, but if you take out the sports of baseball, men's and women's swimming and diving and volleyball, the red, white and blue would rank second in the conference.
Like in the fall, the Titan men's soccer team led its respective sport category with 17 honorees out of the 76 student-athletes. Detroit Mercy softball also led its sport with 11 student-athletes recognized with the accolade. Women's tennis and women's golf also each tied for first in the conference in their respective sports with five honorees each.
Women's soccer had 14 members, while women's track and field and cross country also had double-digit honorees with 13.
Candidates for the Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify:
- Participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports.
- Completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution.
- A cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale).
A total of 973 Horizon League student-athletes achieved Horizon League Academic Honor Roll distinction for the Spring 2018 semester with all 10 member institutions and 19 Horizon League sponsored sports represented.
Women's track and field and cross country led with 137 honorees overall among the 10 schools, while women's soccer was the other sport with more than 100 honorees at 129.
