DETROIT (7/27/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics is continuing to step up its game when it comes to giving the Titan student-athletes a great experience and nutrition is one of those areas where the Titans are taking it to the next level.
The Titans have introduced a Nutrition Station inside Calihan Hall for use by all current Detroit Mercy student-athletes.
A performance team comprised of Sports Medicine and Strength & Conditioning has worked closely together with the Facilities and Game Operations staff to create and maintain a convenient source of nutrition for the 300-plus student-athletes that visit Calihan Hall each week.
The team has refurbished an area in the southwest corner of Calihan Hall as an area for student-athletes to grab snacks and other fuel for post workout recovery before heading off to class, team meetings or other extracurricular activities. The snacks are to be used as supplements for when student-athletes do not have an opportunity to eat due to some of these responsibilities.
"We have one of the best sports nutritionists for college athletics in Jeanne Stevenson and she has taken it to the next level in meeting with student-athletes, team presentations and taking the lead on food provided for our student-athletes," Associate Athletics Director of Sports Medicine
Mike Miller said.
The snacks include NutriGrain Bars, Pretzels, Chex Mix, non-nut Granola Bars, Fruit Snacks, Cheez-It Crackers, BelVita Bars and various fruit items, among other options. They were chosen due to their nutritional value, the allergy restrictions and the consistent availability of the products. Prairie Farms Chocolate Milk and PowerAde is also provided for post-workout recovery.
The nutrition station will be staffed at appropriate times to ensure that Titan student-athletes are receiving the proper among of fuel after a workout or practice.
"Our student-athletes are extremely hard working, both in and out of competition, and this will only enhance their overall performance in both areas," said Director of Strength and Conditioning
Nick Wilson. "All of our student-athletes will benefit from this addition and this project is a great way to start the training for the 2018-19 season."
Miller and Wilson wanted to reiterate that this was just the start and plans would be added in the near future to further the nutrition station in Calihan Hall.
"As a team, we put the plan in motion and we have ideas beyond our imagination, however out next steps will be carefully planned," Miller said. "If this is a successful test run, we will start doing a feasibility study and look at the areas for a permanent station.
"We want to focus on providing our student-athletes with the best resources and tools to be successful in practice, competition and most importantly, academics. We are consulting with several outside vendors, sponsors and resources on campus to assist with this project as we move forward. The sky is the limit with the help from our great partners and support from alumni and fans."
