DETROIT (1/13/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing trio of
Josh Blackburn,
Wiley Dressell and
Algird Szumlas all notched 10-plus wins in Sunday's Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational and the Titans as a team finished 2-3 overall from Calihan Hall.
Blackburn and Szumlas, both senior foilists, each finished 13-2 at Detroit Mercy's home invitational. Dressell, in his third year and a junior in sabre, went 11-1 overall. Senior
Joshua Sexton earned six bout victories in sabre for the Titans, while newcomer
Jaydon Alojipan recorded five bout triumphs in foil.
Detroit Mercy earned its victories over Oakland (17-3) and Michigan State (16-11). The Titans earned at least eight victories in all five dual matches, falling to Michigan (17-10), Cleveland State (19-8) and Wayne State (17-10).
Szumlas went 3-0 against four different teams, while Dressell went 3-0 against three different squads, dropping his only matchup of the day against Michigan. Sexton had at least one victory against each team, while Blackburn went 3-0 against three teams and 2-1 against two others.
Bryce Sturgis also picked up two victories in epee, while
Peter Swanney and
James Baker also notched single bout wins for the red, white and blue.
The Titans return to competition next weekend, fencing in New York -- first at the Army West Point Duals on Saturday and then at the Vassar Duals in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Sunday.
