Algird Szumlas went 22-1 and junior
Wiley Dressell recorded 15 victories over the weekend as the University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team competed at the Army West Point Duals and Vassar Duals on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The Titans competed on Saturday at West Point with Army hosting the meet. The Titans fenced against six schools including Army, Navy, Cleveland State and several other Division III fencing squads from the New York region. Detroit Mercy fell 17-10 to both Army and Navy, but defeated Division-III Hunter College by a 17-10 margin. The red, white and blue also fell to Division III squads in Drew University and the Stevens Institute of Technology.
On Sunday, the Titans fenced at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., falling in a pair of duals with the Brewers.
Szumlas went undefeated on Saturday, putting together a perfect 17-0 mark for the Titans. He then went 5-1 against Vassar on Sunday to close out the strong weekend for the senior foilist. Senior
Josh Blackburn added 10 bout victories for Detroit Mercy over the weekend. His results included a 3-0 record against Navy. Newcomer
Jaydon Alojipan added four bout wins in foil.
Dressell was 15-7 for the Titans in sabre, including a 5-1 record against Vassar on Sunday. Dressell also went 3-0 against Cleveland State and had multiple wins against Navy, Army and Stevens. Senior
Joshua Sexton added six victories for Detroit Mercy in sabre.
Christopher Morrison led the red, white and blue in epee, picking up multiple victories against Army, Cleveland State and Hunter College. He had seven bout triumphs over the weekend.
Detroit Mercy returns to fencing Saturday, traveling to Notre Dame for the DeCicco Duals from South Bend, Ind.
