SOUTH BEND, Ind. (1/26/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing squad returned to competition Saturday at Notre Dame, fencing in the annual DeCicco Duals, held at the Castellan Family Fencing Center. The Titans fenced against Florida, Lawrence, Northwestern and No. 1 ranked Notre Dame.
Detroit Mercy defeated Lawrence, 14-13, while narrowly falling to Florida, 15-12, and also falling to both Northwestern (19-8) and to the top-ranked Fighting Irish (25-2).
Junior
Wiley Dressell went 7-2 in sabre for the Titans with both of his setbacks coming against Notre Dame. Dressell secured 3-0 marks against both Florida and Northwestern, notching another victory over Notre Dame. Senior foilist
Algird Szumlas went 9-3 on the day, picking up three wins against both Florida and Lawrence, earning two wins against Northwestern and another over the Fighting Irish.

Josh Blackburn was 6-6 in foil for Detroit Mercy, going 5-1 against Florida and Lawrence combined. Newcomer
Jaydon Alojipan also picked up a pair of victories.
James Baker (sabre),
Christopher Morrison (epee) and
Peter Swanney (epee) all each earned bout wins for the Titans on Saturday.
Detroit Mercy returns to competition next weekend, fencing on Saturday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Northwestern Mega-Meet from Evanston, Ill.
