Women's Basketball Hosts Eastern Michigan in Final Non-Conference Game

DETROIT (12/20/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team closes the non-conference slate Saturday, hosting Eastern Michigan for a 12 p.m. contest from Calihan Hall. The game opens a basketball doubleheader with the Detroit Mercy men's squad hosting SIU-Edwardsville at 3 p.m. from Dick Vitale Court. It's the final doubleheader of the season.

Both games are set to be streamed live on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN Applications. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children and seniors into the women's basketball contest.

It's the third of four-straight home games for Detroit Mercy in the month of December and fourth game with the Mid-American Conference in non-league play. The Titans host Metro Series rival Oakland next Saturday, Dec. 28 to open Horizon League play in 2019-20.

On The Court:
  • Detroit Mercy earned its second Horizon League Freshman of the Week honor in the first six weeks of the season with forward Bridgid Fox earning the honor on Monday, Dec. 16, following her 14-point, nine-rebound performance against Toledo. Fox is the second Titan to receive the weekly accolade following classmate Sylare Starks on Nov. 25.
  • It's the 29th meeting between the two programs with the Titans and Eagles playing for the 14th-straight season overall. Detroit Mercy holds a 15-13 advantage over EMU.
  • Freshman guard Sylare Starks leads the Titans and all Horizon League freshmen in scoring at 9.9 points per game. She is one point shy of 100 career points in her first 11 games.
  • Fox scored in double figures for the second time in her career with a career-high 14 points against Toledo. Her nine rebounds were also a career-high.
  • Freshman guard Annika Corcoran dished out five assists against the Rockets, which were a Titan season-high and a career-high for Corcoran.
  • Senior Zoey Oatis leads Detroit Mercy and ranks third in the Horizon League in steals per game (2.0). Oatis also leads the Titans in rebounding (5.8 rpg) and is tied for the team lead in assists (17).
  • The Titans are one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I with 10 underclassmen (five freshmen, five sophomores) and holds an average age of 19.3 on its roster.
  • Detroit Mercy shot above 40-percent for the fifth time in the past seven games against Toledo; The Titans also tied their season low with just 11 turnovers against the Rockets.
  • The Titans have hosted more than 16,500 fans in their five Field Trip Day games over the past five seasons, twice clearing the 4,000-fan mark for a game.
  • Head coach Bernard Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans and has led them to two top-four finishes and a Horizon League championship game in 2017.
  • The Titans were picked to finish in ninth place in the 2019-20 Horizon League Preseason Poll.
  • Detroit Mercy plays all four games in December at home, hosting Valparaiso (Dec. 5), Toledo (Dec. 14), Eastern Michigan (Dec. 21) and Oakland (Dec. 28) from Calihan Hall.
  • The red, white and blue also open Horizon League play with five of seven from Calihan Hall, hosting Milwaukee (Jan. 9), Green Bay (Jan. 11), Cleveland State (Jan. 16) and Youngstown State (Jan. 18) after a road trip to Chicago and Indianapolis to play UIC (Jan. 2) and IUPUI (Jan. 4) just after the New Years holiday.
Fox Named Horizon League Freshman of the Week
Titan freshman forward Bridgid Fox was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week by the league office on Monday, following her performance last week in a home game against Toledo. It was the first career honor for Fox and second for the Titans in the opening six weeks of the season with Sylare Starks earning the weekly accolade on Nov. 25.

Fox nearly had her first career double-double, totaling career-highs with 14 points and nine rebounds, while shooting 54-percent from the field (6-for-11). The freshman from Altoona, Pa. recorded five offensive rebounds out of her nine overall and notched two assists and one block for the Titans against Toledo.

Last Time Out
The Titans played Toledo tough for the first three quarters, but dropped an 82-64 contest with the visiting Rockets from Calihan Hall on Saturday, Dec. 14. Sylare Starks made her first five shots and finished with 17 points for the Titans, while Bridgid Fox added 14 points and nine rebounds for Detroit Mercy. Annika Corcoran dished out a season-high five assists and Zoey Oatis added seven points and six rebounds.

Detroit Mercy shot 42.4 percent from the floor, the fifth game in the past seven shooting above the 40-percent mark. The Titans also tied a season-low with 11 turnovers and passed out 13 assists. Fox had five of the team's 12 offensive rebounds. The Titans trailed by one late in the third quarter, but Toledo pulled away down the stretch, out-scoring the Titans 23-10 in the fourth.

Scouting Eastern Michigan:
  • Eastern Michigan is 4-6 on the season and coming off a 68-59 road victory at Horizon League foe UIC on Wednesday. EMU also played Youngstown State earlier this season, falling narrowly 79-77 to the Penguins.
  • EMU had 19 steals against the Flames on Wednesday and are 1-4 on the road this season. As a squad, EMU has tallied 8.8 steals per game and has five players with double-figure thefts this season.
  • Areanna Combs -- a transfer from Oklahoma State -- leads the team in scoring at 17.5 points per game in her first four games for the Eagles.
  • Freshman Aaliyah Stanley has added 14.2 ppg, sinking 25 shots from beyond the arc.
  • Sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico has added 3.6 assists per game, while junior Autumn Hudson leads the squad in rebounding at 6.0 caroms per contest.

Detroit Mercy hosts Oakland in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Saturday, Dec. 28 from Calihan Hall. The game time is set for 12 p.m. and may be seen live on ESPN-Plus. Following the game against the Golden Grizzlies, Detroit Mercy hits the road, visiting UIC on Jan. 2 in Chicago and IUPUI on Jan. 4 in Indianapolis.
