@DetroitMBB Looks For Home Sweep On Superbowl Weekend

DETROIT (2/1/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will look for a sweep of its quick two-game homestand as the Titans welcome Youngstown State into Calihan Hall on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and WADL-38 with Dan Hasty and Earl Cureton on the call, while Jeremy Otto will handle the play-by-play on the radio side on 910 AM Superstation.

Detroit Mercy got off to a slow start against Cleveland State, but took control of the game with a 32-8 run to improve to 9-13 on the season and 6-4 in the Horizon League, the most overall and conference wins they have had since 2015-16.

Freshman Antoine Davis scored 29 points, mostly at the free throw line where he was a career-best 15-of-17, while senior Gerald Blackshear Jr. collected a career-best 14 rebounds.

Youngstown State will look to stay in the running for a spot in Motor City Madness as the Penguins are 7-16, 3-7 in the league after defeating Oakland, 75-74, on Thursday.

Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale online at DetroitTitans.com/tix.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Detroit Mercy has dominated the all-time series to the tune of a 38-9 advantage, which includes winning 12 in a row and 16 of the last 17 meetings.
  • The Titans are also 21-3 at home against the Penguins with seven-straight wins at Calihan Hall.
  • The last YSU win in the series was in 2014, while the last time the Titans lost at home to Youngstown State was in 2012.

FAMILY FUN
  • Nothing new for the Titans to have a family connection in the program and this season, Detroit Mercy will feature three Davis' in head coach Mike Davis, assistant coach Mike Davis Jr. and freshman guard Antoine Davis.
  • From 2010-13, the Titans had head coach Ray McCallum and star guard Ray McCallum winning the Horizon League Championship in 2012 and earning a trip to the NIT in 2013.

NATIONAL ATTENTION
  • Antoine Davis was tabbed the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week on Jan. 8 after a week that saw him average 40.5 points against Wright State and NKU.
  • The rookie shot 58.3 percent overall (28-of-48), 54.1 percent from three (13-of-24) and 92.3 percent at the free throw line (12-of-13) netting 48 against Wright State and 33 against NKU.
  • Davis was selected by CBSSports.com's Matt Norlander, in partnership with the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and he is the first Titan to ever win the accolade.

AD GETTING BUCKETS
  • Antoine Davis topped the team with 29 points against Cleveland State and has led the team in scoring 20 times, while sharing the team high with 29 alongside Josh McFolley against Green Bay, giving him a lead or share of the top effort in all 21 games he has played.
  • He now has 15, 20-point games, eight 30+ performances and a pair of 40-point efforts in his first 21 collegiate games, the only freshman in school history with two 40-point outings.
  • He is one of just four freshmen in Division I to score in double figures in every game they have played on the year (RJ Barrett & Zion Williamson-Duke, Lamine Diane-Cal State Northridge)
  • To start the year, he posted eight-straight 20-point games, the first Titan to have eight-straight games with 20 or more since Willie Green's 10 in a row in 2002-03.
  • His eight 30-point games on the season are the most since Archie Tullos had 10 in 1987-88.

ABOUT THAT 48-POINT GAME
  • Antoine Davis' season-high 48 points against Wright State was the fourth most in league play in Horizon League history and the most since LaSalle's Kareem Townes had 52 against Loyola (Ill) in 1995.
  • The 48 points is the sixth most by a league player against any competition in the 40 years of the Horizon League.
  • He is also the third freshman since 1996-97 to score at least 48 points joining Oklahoma's Trae Young's 48 points against Oklahoma State last season and St. Peter's Keydren Clark's 48 against Northern Arizona in 2002.

DAVIS ALREADY WITH 3 TITAN FRESHMAN RECORDS
  • Freshman Antoine Davis has already taken down three Titan freshman records this season in points in a game (48), 3-pointers in a season (96) and total points (574).

HORIZON LEAGUE MARKS
  • Freshman Antoine Davis is also attacking some freshman Horizon League records as he already owns the mark for points in a game (48) and 3-pointers in a season (96).

  • He is chasing the NCAA record for most 3-pointers by a freshman, held by Stephen Curry, who had 122 at Davidson in 2006-07.

ZONE PRINCIPLES
  • The Titans have frustrated teams at times trying to shoot the three ball as they are holding teams to 33.3 percent from behind the arc, third in the Horizon League.
  • Last year, the Titans ended the season ranked 333rd in three-point field goal percentage defense (39.7%).
  • Overall, the defense has held teams to shooting 44.0 percent or less in 11 games on the year and under 40.0 percent on six occasions, including YSU to just 37.5 percent, CSU to 38.6 percent and WSU to 37.7 percent.

OH LORDY HE WENT FOR 40, AGAIN

  • Davis shot a season-best 15-of-24 from the field and tied his own school record nailing 10-of-15 from three-point land.
  • The 48 points is the fourth-highest scoring outburst in NCAA Division I this year, and the second most against a Division I opponent.
  • Earlier in the season, he registered a Titan freshman record 42 points against Loyola Maryland going 14-of-21 from the field and 10-of-14 from the outside with five assists, three rebounds and two steals.
