Rosemont, Ill. (2/10/19) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team won their third straight game at the Total Control Sports Invitational, this time against former Horizon League opponent Butler, to propel their record to 3-2 overall.
The Titans dropped both games on opening day before rallying on day two and winning consecutive competitions against Evansville and Purdue Fort Wayne.
Freshman
Emily Wagenbrenner got her first start in right field, while
Piper Roth saw her first action at the plate.
Sophomore
Ellie Boteler had two hits, including a solo home run to right center field which produced an RBI. Freshman
Jessenia Castillo had two hits and scored two runs and senior
Courtney Gilbert had two RBI.
DETROIT MERCY 5 - BUTLER 2
Ashley Mauser got the nod in the circle for the red, white and blue on the last day of the tournament.
This time around, she got run support right from the start. Castillo led the game off with a single to right field, and after advancing on a wild pitch was able to score on a sac fly from Gilbert making the score 1-0.
In the second inning, Boteler hit a solo bomb over the right center field fence doubling the Titans lead to 2-0.
Wagenbrenner led off the third inning with a walk, which was followed up by a double from Castillo. With two runners in scoring position,
Jordan Manno and Gilbert would both his sac flies, scoring the runners and again doubling the Titans lead, this time to 4-0.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning halving the Titans lead courtesy of a two run double. Sophomore
Regan Glenn went to the circle in relief for Mauser and got the job done. She forced two ground outs and recorded a strikeout to keep the score 4-2.
In the fifth inning,
Alyssa Lang knocked an RBI single down the right field line to extend the Titans lead to 5-2.
Liz Murphy came in for the final two innings to get the close and did just that. She set Butler down 1-2-3 in consecutive innings to earn the save and secure the 5-2 victory for the Titans.
Mauser tossed three innings scattering six hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts. Glenn got the first win of her career while tossing two scoreless innings and Murphy tossed two scoreless as well, earning the save.
ON DECK
The Titans will head to Charleston, S.C. for the Charleston Tournament where they will face ETSU and Charleston Southern from Feb. 15-17.
