Titans Tripped Up On Day One Of Charleston Southern Tourney

CHARLESTON, SC. (2/15/19) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team suffered a pair of losses on day one of the Charleston Southern Tourney.

Taryn Peru and Liz Paver made their first starts for the Titans, and Paver garnered an RBI in her first at bat of the game with a deep sacrifice fly to center field.

Peru fielded .100% from third base and handled every ground ball with great poise while keeping the Titans in the game early on.

DETROIT MERCY 0 – ETSU 1
Ashley Mauser got the start in game one for the red, white and blue and pitched a gem, but suffered an unfortunate loss.

The Titans started the game off well when Jordan Manno drew a walk and Kori Keyes singled up the middle, but were unable to capitalize.

The score remained 0-0 until the third inning, when the lone run of the game was scored by ETSU.

Singles from Ellie Boteler and McKenna Tanguay put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, which put pressure on the Buccaneers. However, the Titans were unable to drive home the equalizer and dropped game one by a final of 1-0.

Mauser tossed six innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out six.

DETROIT MERCY 2 – CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 10
Liz Murphy got the nod on the mound in game two for the red, white and blue.

The Titans fell behind in the first inning by a score of 1-0 in the first inning. However, they immediately bounced back with two runs in the top half of the second inning.

Alyssa Lang singled to center field to lead off the inning, and Emily Wagenbrenner drew a walk to put runners on first and second.

Peru was then hit by the pitch, which loaded the bases with one out for Paver. She drove a ball to the warning track in center field, driving Lang in from third base and leveling the score at 1-1.

Maggie Hampton then came in to pinch run for Peru, and while she stole second, Wagenbrenner snuck home and gave the Titans their first lead of the contest, 2-1.

The Titans made some strong plays defensively, but were unable to contain the Buccaneers as they lost by a final score of 10-2.

The Titans will finish up action from the Charleston Southern Tourney with 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. games versus Virginia Tech and ETSU tomorrow.
