With the help of the event's player selection committee, which includes a variety of media experts from ESPN, The Athletic, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Fox Sports, The Ringer and more, Intersport announced the players named to the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship late season watch list. The final roster of players, all of whom will complete their college eligibility at the end of the season, will represent each of the 32 Division I conferences. Last year, the Big Ten team of Indiana's Robert Johnson, Minnesota's Nate Mason, Ohio State's Jae'Sean Tate and Purdue's Vincent Edwards took home the inaugural 3X3U title.
The complete Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship late season watch list can be found on the attached PDF. Final rosters will be announced prior to the start of the championship.
The three-day competition will be held April 5-7 at Mall of America, marking just the second live sporting event to ever originate from the country's largest retail and entertainment destination and the first in more than 20 years. All-Star teams of seniors representing every Division I conference will compete for a $150,000 prize pool, where the champions will take home $100,000, double the prize money from a year ago. The remainder will be paid out in $1,000 installments during pool play action. Additionally, the championship team will earn the right to compete in the 2019 USA Basketball 3x3 Open National Championship in May.
Also this year, the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship will introduce partnerships with world-renowned brands Hooters, Rocket Mortgage and Old El Paso. These highly engaged brands elevate an already robust portfolio of event partners, including title sponsor Dos Equis, which will add to the excitement of college basketball's most "Interesante" tournament.
"It's a proven fact that nothing goes better with three-on-three basketball than a cold beer, so we're excited to be back headlining the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship again this year," said Quinn Kilbury, Head of Partnerships and Consumer Experience at Heineken USA. "While last year's event was off-the-charts in excitement, this year we're bringing a huge dose of Interesante…in the form of literal mountains of cash for our winners."
All games of the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship will be carried live on Twitter or ESPN2. Pool play will begin at 3 p.m. ET on April 5, with 24 games streamed live exclusively on Twitter. Pool play will continue on April 6 at 9:30 a.m. with 24 more games streamed live exclusively on Twitter. Round of 16 and quarterfinal games will be streamed live exclusively on Twitter at 10:30 a.m. on April 7, with semifinal, consolation and championship games televised live on ESPN2 later that day at 3 p.m. Returning to call all the action throughout the tournament will be the voice of FIBA 3x3 basketball, Kyle Montgomery, with Robbie Hummel of ESPN and Tate Frazier and Mark Titus of The Ringer's One Shining Podcast providing color commentary and sideline coverage. Barstool Sports' Bobby Reagan will also serve as a social media correspondent.
Admission to the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship is free and fans are encouraged to be part of the atmosphere during regular Mall of America operating hours (10 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. CT on April 5-6, 11 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. CT on April 7).
"The inaugural Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship was an incredible success, and we are prepared to take it to another level this year," said Intersport executive vice president Drew Russell. "With the backdrop of Mall of America creating a truly unique environment, these athletes will have another great opportunity to showcase their talents to a national audience and position themselves for future professional opportunities in the game of basketball."
Over their college careers, the 128 players who will be part of this year's Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship have played in front of thousands of fans in arenas all around the country. None of those experiences will be quite like the one they'll have when they take to the half-court inside Mall of America, the most popular tourist destination in Minnesota with more than 40 million visitors each year. The Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship will be staged in the Rotunda at the Mall, which hosted the first WCW Monday Nitro in September 1995. It will be just the second live sporting event to be broadcast in the Mall's history.
"We recognize the unique nature of the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship, and knew it needed a one of a kind venue to serve as host here in the Twin Cities," said Jill Renslow, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Mall of America. "The energy that lives within Mall of America every day will be amplified by the enthusiasm and passion of not only these players but also the countless basketball fans who will be visiting during that time. We're excited to have a front row seat to this year's action and bring another exceptional event to Mall of America."
Bragging rights for the winners won't end in Minnesota; the 2019 champion will earn the right to represent the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship at the USA Basketball 3x3 Open National Championship later this spring. There, athletes will have the opportunity to be selected to represent the United States in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, held June 18-23 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Participating athletes will also be considered for the USA Basketball 3x3 athlete pool, which may lead to future opportunities in other FIBA 3x3 competitions. Of note, the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo will feature 3x3 basketball as a medal sport for the first time.
