On the day,
Courtney Gilbert had three hits and one RBI and
Kori Keyes had one hit, one RBI and one run scored.
Ashley Mauser got the nod in game one and picked up her first win of the season, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings, while scattering six hits and seven strikeouts.
DETROIT MERCY 1 – DREXEL 0
The Titans opened the day with a low scoring contest against the Drexel Dragons.
It would quickly be realized that this was a defensive battle, as both pitchers flashed moments of brilliance from inside the circle.
Both teams struggled at the plate to begin the game, but the Dragons threatened first. In the bottom of the third inning, they loaded the bases with only one out.
Mauser then went to work, recording a routine ground ball and fanning the next batter, keeping the score level at 0-0.
Then, in the top of the fourth inning, senior
Jordan Manno got the action started for the red, white and blue. She drove a double into the left center field gap to lead off the inning, setting up the Titans for the lone strike of the game.
Gilbert stepped up and put a ball in the exact same spot, bringing Manno home with ease and making the score 1-0 in favor of the Titans.
Mauser then went back out to the mound to take care of business, and looked dominant all the way through the sixth inning.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, she put runners on first and second with one out, and
Liz Murphy came in to try to preserve the narrow lead and earn the save for the Titans.
She hit the next batter, loading the bases with only one out, but did not let that deter her. She made the next batter pop up to the infield, where Gilbert made a spectacular diving catch to keep all runners in place.
With the bases loaded and the count full, Murphy got a dribbler right back to her, flipped it to first base, and that was all she wrote in game one for the Titans.
Murphy earned herself her second save of the season with her brief appearance in the final inning.
DETROIT MERCY 2 – MANHATTAN 13
The Manhattan game was a game of firsts for freshman
Maggie Hampton, who made her first start of the season for the Titans, as well as collected her first collegiate hit.
The Titans jumped out in front early in this contest, courtesy of a solo home run from Keyes in the bottom of the first, her second of the season.
After establishing a 1-0 lead, Gilbert then doubled down the left field line and eventually stole third, leaving her in great scoring position for
Ellie Boteler.
Boteler hit a hard ground ball to shortstop, and it was too much for her to handle, as she reached first base safely, and Gilbert scored at home, doubling the Titans lead to 2-0.
Manhattan began to chip away at the Titans lead in the second inning, when they earned a run back, halving the Titans lead to 2-1.
They then overtook the lead in the third inning by a score of 3-2. They began to compile a bigger lead as time went on, eventually winning by a score of 13-2.
