EVANSTON, Ill. (2/4/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team went against some of the top programs in the country in the second day of the Northwestern Duals on Sunday, competing against seven different programs. Detroit Mercy finished 1-6 on the day, earning the head-to-head victory over Cal Tech.
The Titans went against four teams that are receiving votes in the most recent CollegeFencing360.com Men's Coaches Poll, including No. 10-ranked Duke. Detroit Mercy fell 24-3 to the Blue Devils and to three teams receiving votes -- Air Force (20-7), UC-San Diego (22-5) and North Carolina (24-3). The Titans topped Cal Tech, 17-10, also falling to Incarnate Word and Northwestern.
Junior
Wiley Dressell led the Titans with a 12-6 mark in sabre. He went 3-0 against Incarnate Word, UCSD and Northwestern. He also earned single bout wins against Duke, North Carolina and Air Force. The sabre squad earned 23 bout victories overall with
Joshua Sexton picking up seven victories and
James Baker earning four triumphs in sabre.
Senior
Algird Szumlas went 9-9 for the Titans to lead the men's foil squad. Szumlas was 2-1 against No. 10-ranked Duke's fencers and also had 2-1 marks against North Carolina, Northwestern and Incarnate Word. Senior
Josh Blackburn earned seven victories for Detroit Mercy, while newcomer
Jaydon Alojipan earned two more wins in foil.
The Titans return to competition next weekend on Saturday, Feb. 9 at nearby Wayne State University in Detroit for the Wayne State Duals. It's the final dual meet for Detroit Mercy this season prior to the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 at Ohio State University.
