CLEVELAND, Ohio (3/22/2019) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing junior
Wiley Dressell (Royal Oak, Mich.) wrapped up competition Friday morning at the 2019 NCAA Men's Fencing National Championship from the Wolstein Center in downtown Cleveland. The national finals were hosted by Cleveland State and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.
Dressell fenced in his final eight bouts Friday morning, competing in rounds four and five in day two of the men's sabre national finals. Dressell picked up a bout victory during round five and went 1-7 on Friday to bring his two-day total to 1-22 during the nation finals. He placed 24th overall for the Titans going against the top collegiate sabreurs in the country.

Wiley Dressell secured three touches or better in five of his eight bouts on Friday. He earned his win over Stanford's Samuel Kwong by a 5-4 margin and also narrowly fell 5-4 to Syed Emir Putra of UC-San Diego. He earned three more touches in three more bouts -- against Stanford's Erwin Cai in round five after securing three touches each against Boston College's Bolang Meng and NYU's Mikolaj Bak in defeats in round four.
He finished the tournament with 47 touches scored against 114 touches received for an indicator of -67. Dressell earned two touches or better in 15 of 23 of his bouts during the tournament overall and at least one touch in all but two bouts.
Detroit Mercy was one of 22 teams to participate in the 2019 NCAA Men's Fencing National Championship and one of two programs from the state of Michigan (Wayne State being the other). The Titans were making their sixth appearance at the national finals in 20 seasons (2005-07, 2011, 2017, 2019) under head coach

Penn State's Karol Metryka won the men's sabre national championship, 15-12, over Princeton's Daniel Kwak. Columbia leads the team standings with 90 points following the men's portion of the event. Penn State (84 points) and the defending national champions Notre Dame (78 points) round out the top three.
