Titans Drop Nail Biter Versus UIC

CHICAGO, Ill. (3/30/19) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped a nail biter versus defending Horizon League Champion UIC on Saturday afternoon.

On the day, Ellie Boteler, Kori Keyes, Leena Mortensen and Taylor Gauthier all had hits for the Titans, while two pitchers saw action in the game.

Ashley Mauser got the start, going four innings, scattering four hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and four strikeouts, suffering a loss in the contest.

Liz Murphy pitched in relief of Mauser, going two innings, surrendering only one hit and one walk while striking out four batters.

The red, white and blue threatened early. Courtney Gilbert led the game off with a walk and advanced to second base on a single by Boteler, but the Titans were unable to capitalize.

Gauthier doubled to right center in the top of the second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Titans were unable to drive her home.

UIC put the only two runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the third inning and relied on their defense to close out the game after that.

Mortensen tried to spark a late rally with a double in the seventh inning, but the rally ultimately came up short, ending the game with a final score of 2-0 in favor of UIC.

ON DECK
The Titans now have a week off before taking on Horizon League foe Youngstown State next weekend, April 5-6 at home from Buysse Ballpark.
