Senior Day Has Titans Hosting Canisius On Saturday

DETROIT (4/10/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team will prepare for a pivotal MAAC contest as the Titans welcome Jesuit-rival Canisius on Saturday in a rematch of the 2018 MAAC Championship.

Game time is set for Noon at Titan Field and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

It will also be Senior Day as Detroit Mercy honors its nine-member senior class prior to the game in Mark Anstead, Connor Bennardo, Nick Boynton, Emmett Green, Sam Horton, Brent Lubin, Mike Sforza, Michael Turnbull and Matthew Vangalen

Detroit Mercy enters the game at 7-3 overall and in first place in the MAAC at 4-1. A win would guarantee the Titans their third winning campaign in school history and, more importantly, clinch a spot in the MAAC Championship.

Canisius is 7-5 on the season and 3-1 in the MAAC as the Golden Griffins would take over first place with a win and inch closer to a playoff spot of its own.

AGAINST THE MAAC
  • Detroit Mercy is now 33-28 in regular season league play since joining the MAAC in 2010.
  • The Titans set their all-time win mark for conference games in a season last year at 5-1 and are currently 4-1 so far.

TITANS LOOKING FOR ANOTHER WINNING SEASON
  • Detroit Mercy set a school record with nine wins last season, eclipsing the previous mark of 8-6 in 2015, which was head coach Chris Kolon's first year at the helm.
  • Detroit Mercy also posted a school-record five-game winning streak in 2018.
  • The Titans are currently 7-3 and another win would guarantee them their third career winning campaign.
  • A win would also clinch a spot in the MAAC Championships.

JESUIT PRIDE
  •  Detroit Mercy and Canisius are just two the eight Jesuit schools playing Division I lacrosse.
  • The others are Fairfield, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Loyola (Md.), Marquette and St. Joseph's.
  • The Titans have played four of the Jesuit institutions in Canisius (6-5), Marquette (1-6), Georgetown (0-1) and Saint Joseph's (0-1).

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Titans and Golden Griffins have played some great games as Detroit Mercy leads the overall series, 6-5, and is 3-1 at home.Three of the games have been decided by one goal - two in overtime - while six have seen a goal differential of just two.
  • Of course, this is a rematch of the 2018 MAAC Championship, won by Canisius, 10-9, in overtime.

MAN-UP VS. MAN-DOWN
  • Detroit Mercy comes into the game second in the MAAC and 17th in the nation in man-up offense at 40.5 percent (15-37), while Canisius is eighth in the league and 71st in the nation in man-down defense at 42.9 percent (12-of-28).
  • Flip it the other way and Canisius leads the MAAC and is 13th in the nation in man-up scoring at 52.4 percent (22-42), while the Titans are seventh in the conference and 56th in the country on the penalty kill at 39.5 percent (17-43).

FAMILY CONNECTION
  • Detroit Mercy and Canisius do share a family bond in the Boissonneault family.
  • Mathieu Boissonneault is currently third on the Golden Griffins with 33 points. He also had the game-winner against the Titans last year in the MAAC Championship.
  • His older sister, Emily, was on the inaugural Titan women's lacrosse team in 2009 and starred for the Titans from 2009-12.
  • She is still the Titan career leader with 272 points and 242 goals and is still in the NCAA Division I record books as she ranks ninth in career caused turnovers per game (2.28), tied for 15th in caused turnovers (157), 16th in goals per game (3.51) and tied for 16th in career goals (242).

VANTASTIC
  • Senior Matthew Vangalen set the school record for points last season recording 51 points on a career-high 31 goals with 20 assists and he is on pace to challenge that mark with 38 total points through 10 games.
  • He tallied six points on five assists and had the game-winning goal in the win at Marist.
  • He now 38 points on the season with 14 goals and 24 assists - second in school history and just two away from the single-season mark of 24 by Alex Maini in 2014.
  • He just broke Maini's career assist mark as he now has 65 helpers in his career as a Titan.
  • Vangalen posted his 10th career hat trick with four goals and five points at nationally-ranked Notre Dame and followed that up with his 11th registering three goals and a helper in the win at Marquette and 12th with six points on three goals and a school-record six assists at Bellarmine.
  • His third goal at Bellarmine was the game-winner with 10 seconds left in a 15-14 contest.
  • Vangalen is third in school history with 136 points and 71 goals.
  • Vangalen - a preseason All-MAAC selection by the coaches and Inside Lacrosse - was a Second Team All-MAAC honoree last year for the second-straight season.

THE BIG LOGAN
  • Sophomore Logan Shamblin showed no signs of a sophomore slump in the season opener as he tied his career high with 15 saves in the 9-8 victory over Jacksonville.
  • He stopped a career-high 17 shots in the come-from-behind win at Marist and that was after posting 15 saves against Monmouth and a then career-best 16 saves at Quinnipiac. He also had a season-high seven ground balls and a career-best three caused turnovers against Monmouth. Following the game, he was tabbed the MAAC's Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

NOTHING BUT JARZ
  • Junior Alex Jarzembowski already had his name on top of the Titan record book in faceoff wins as he twice tied a school record with 16, but he now has the mark all to himself, breaking that mark in back-to-back games.
  • He was 27-of-33 with a program-best 15 ground balls in the victory at Bellarmine, where he won the game's last 13 faceoffs and also scored a goal.
  • The 27 faceoffs are tied for the second most in the nation alongside Marist's Peyton Smith (27 vs. Hartford) and behind only Hobart's Matthew Pedicine's 32 at Siena.
  • At Marquette, he was 19-of-30 with five ground balls and a goal and put together a 19-of-22 effort with 13 GB's and a score at St. Bonaventure.

  • Coming into the contest, he had attempted just one shot in his first two seasons.
  • For that effort, he was tabbed the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 4.
  • He has added to his arsenal with six goals on eights shots so far on the year with five coming by way of directly winning the faceoff and firing at the goalie.
  • Jarzembowski was named to the All-MAAC Second Team in 2018 as he set a school record winning 163-of-313 (.521).

MENDELL ON FIRE
  • Junior Seth Mendell could not wait for the season to start as he led the Titan offense with three goals and four points in the 9-8 victory over Jacksonville.
  • He has not cooled off at all as he had a goal and two assists last week against Manhattan and that was after five-straight hat tricks.
  • In his last six games - he missed the game against Monmouth due to injury - he has been unstoppable with 20 goals and 34 points with three markers at Bellarmine, Marist and Quinnipiac, four goals and two assists at Air Force and a career-tying six goals at St. Bonaventure, which earned him MAAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career.
  • He currently leads the team with 25 goals and is second at 31 points. He also leads the MAAC and is 29th in the nation with 2.88 goals per game.
  • Despite battling an injury, Mendell played in all 16 games with 14 starts last year and finished third on the team with a career-high 27 points, tied for third with a career-best 19 goals and fifth handing out eight assists, tying his rookie mark.
  • In his career, he now has 84 points on 62 goals and 22 assists in 41 games, sixth in goals and ninth in points in school history.

ALL PAYTON
  • Freshman Max Payton made his collegiate debut at St. Bonaventure, but in just his second career game, the rookie got the start and did not disappoint scoring three goals at Quinnipiac.
  • He came back to record two goals and an assist in the win over Monmouth and also had two goals with a helper at Marist to earn the MAAC Rookie of the Week.

BALANCED OFFENSE
  • The Titan offense saw six players score in the season-opening win over Jacksonville and now, 15 total have found the back of the net.
