Softball Completes Sweep of Cleveland State with Wednesday Victory

CLEVELAND, OHIO (4/10/19) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team completed a sweep of Horizon League foe Cleveland State with a victory on Wednesday afternoon.

On the day, Sydney Pollock had two hits and scored a run, Courtney Gilbert had two hits and scored two runs and McKenna Tanguay and Kori Keyes each had an RBI.

The Titans fell behind early in the contest, surrendering two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Vikings lead lasted for two innings, but in the top of the third, back-to-back singles from Pollock and Gilbert put two runners on with no outs.

A fielder's choice forcing Pollock out at third and a fly out to center field dampened the hopes of the Titans, but an error from Cleveland State's center fielder allowed Gilbert and Jordan Manno to come around and score, tying the score at 2-2.

In the top of the fifth, Pollock again got things started, this time with a double to the wall in right field.

A single to left from Gilbert put runners on the corners with no outs for Manno. She grounded out to the pitcher, but was able to advance Gilbert to second base.

With runners on second and third and one out, Head Coach John Conway called for a suicide squeeze, and Keyes executed it to perfection.

Pollock scored at home plate, and an error by the Vikings allowed Gilbert to come all the way around from second to score, giving the Titans their first lead of the game, 4-2.

Keyes advanced to second during the chaos, and a sac fly to right field from Ellie Boteler put her on third base with two outs and Tanguay at bat.

Tanguay drove a single down the left field line, bringing Keyes home and extending the Titans lead to 5-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cleveland State put one run on the board, making the score 5-3 and ending Ashley Mauser's day on the mound.

Mauser went 5.1 innings, scattering three hits, three runs (two earned), four walks and seven strikeouts.

Liz Murphy came in to relieve Mauser of her duties with runners on first and second and one out. Murphy got some help from the defense when the batter hit into an unassisted double play at first base, courtesy of a beautiful diving play from Leena Mortensen

Murphy took care of the Vikings 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, recording her Horizon League best fifth save of the season and securing the 5-3 win and sweep.

Mauser picked up her third win on the weekend, bringing her record to 12-8 overall.
