Women's Soccer Honors 2018 Season At Annual Team Banquet

DETROIT (4/19/2019) -- It was a night to remember the success of the past season and honor the senior class as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer program held its annual end-of-the-year banquet on Thursday at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak.

The nine Titan seniors were honored on the night and gave speeches in Caitlin Carroll, Carly Fiorido, Elizabeth Gonser, Sarah Hirschmann, Molly Kane, Marina Manzo, Kelsey Mendez, Chloe Ricciardi and Aubree Snow.

Fiorido was named the Team MVP as she ended an impressive career that saw her start all 75 games she appeared in. She was First Team All-Horizon League, a member of the All-Tournament Team and a conference All-Academic selection as the team captain helped lead a stout defense and took on an offensive role, tying for the team lead with a career-high five goals – tied for sixth in the Horizon League - and was second on the squad with 11 points. Four of her five goals were either game-tying or game winning-markers, with three occurring with less than a minute to play in a period.

The Offensive Player of the Year accolade went to freshman Julie Ann Piechocki, while the Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to Manzo.

Piechocki was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team after starting all 20 games and leading the team with 16 points and six assists and tying for the team lead with five goals. She was tied for fifth overall in the league in points and sixth in assists and goals and her five markers on the year were the most by a Titan freshman since 2010, while her six assists and 16 points were the most by a Titan rookie since 1999.

Manzo was the Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-Horizon League for the second time in her career. She topped the HL registering career highs in save percentage (.837), total saves (113), saves per game (5.65) and a school-record tying nine shutouts. Her career-best 1.03 goals against average was the fifth lowest ever by a Titan, and she ranked eighth in the nation in total saves, which was also third in the school record book.

The Coaches Award was received by sophomore Kelli Doyle as the midfielder started all 20 games and was fourth on the team with five points on two goals – both game-winners -  and an assist. She was one of the toughest Titans, winning balls in the air all year long and was a big reason why the Titans turned their season around.

The 2018 season saw the Titans silence their critics as a squad that was picked to finish eighth in the Horizon League Preseason Poll and out of the playoffs ended up fifth and knocked off a higher-seeded team on the road in the postseason to reach the conference semifinals for the 16th time in school history.

Detroit Mercy actually started the year at 1-3-1 and was 3-7-3 overall and 0-4-1 in the Horizon League, when the red, white and blue went on one of the longest winning streaks in school history, ultimately ending the year with a winning campaign at 9-8-3.

The Titans won four-straight HL games to make the postseason and won six in a row, the third longest winning streak in school history. All six wins were by shutout marking the first time in school history Detroit Mercy had blanked six-straight opponents and that shutout streak lasted 610:32.

The women's soccer team would like to thank all the parents, supporters, donors and everyone who helped make this another tremendous year.
