Murphy's No Hitter Propels Titans To Series Victory Over NKU

DETROIT (4/27/19) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team split games versus Northern Kentucky on Saturday, clinching an overall series victory, 2-1.

Liz Murphy tossed a no hitter in game one of the doubleheader, giving up only two walks and striking out eight batters on the way to her first career no no.

On the day, Courtney Gilbert had five hits, one run and one RBI, Jordan Manno had two hits, two RBI and two runs, and Liz Paver had three hits and one run.

DETROIT MERCY 4 – NKU 0
McKenna Tanguay led off the game with a single up the middle and Manno followed it with a two run shot over the right field fence, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead after only two batters.

Gilbert stepped into the batters box next and followed suit, tattooing one over the left field fence, going back-to-back with Manno and extending the Titans lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the second, Sydney Pollock notched her first career home run, a shot over the fence in right field, bringing the lead up to 4-0.

That was all Murphy needed as she dominated from start to finish, surrendering no hits and striking out eight batters, four of which went down looking en route to a no hitter and a 4-0 win.

The Titans notched three home runs in a game for the second time this season.

DETROIT MERCY 4 -- NKU 6
NKU got on the board in the top of the first with a double into right center and a single into right field.

Alyssa Lang led off the second inning with a single to left field, and errors on the Norse defense allowed her to come around and score after a hard hit ball to shortstop from Ellie Boteler, leveling the score, 1-1.

Paver then singled into left field, followed by a walk from Pollock, and a fielding error from the shortstop on a hit from Tanguay allowed two more runners to come home and score, making the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Boteler and Paver hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and Maggie Hampton came in as a pinch runner for Boteler.

Pollock laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners into scoring position for Tanguay.

Tanguay executed a picture perfect suicide squeeze bunt, allowing Hampton to score at home, extending the lead to 4-1.

Errors haunted the Titans in the fifth inning, when NKU put four runs on the board, taking the lead back by a score of 5-4.

The Norse added a run in the top of the seventh, extending the lead to 6-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Titans had the bases loaded with two outs, but were unable to capitalize, falling short in the comeback, 6-4.

ON DECK
The Titans will have a week off before completing their season with a home series versus IUPUI next weekend, May 3-4. The seven Titans on the roster will be honored next Saturday before game one.
