Titans Tame Jaguars With Late Rally, Clinch Second Place In Horizon League

DETROIT (5/3/19) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team rallied late to knock off visiting IUPUI, 5-2, and clinch second place in the Horizon League.

That win also helped the Titans secure a first round bye in the upcoming Horizon League tournament in the process.

On the day, Liz Paver and Ellie Boteler both had two hits and an RBI, Courtney Gilbert had two hits, and Emily Wagenbrenner had two hits and scored two runs.

Ashley Mauser collected her 16th overall win and league high 10th win in Horizon League play, while Liz Murphy collected her league high seventh save on the day.

DETROIT MERCY 5 – IUPUI 2
IUPUI notched their only two runs of the game in the top of the first inning, courtesy of a two run homer.

The Titans responded in the bottom of the second inning, when Wagenbrenner singled through the right side.

Paver then stepped into the batter's box and laced a double into right center, bringing Wagenbrenner all the way around to score, and halving the Titans deficit, 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Boteler leveled the game with one swing of the bat, a solo home run over the fence in right center field.

With the score level at 2-2, Leena Mortensen singled down the left field line and was pinch run for by Cami Sinclair

A bunt single from Wagenbrenner advanced Sinclair to second, and another from Paver loaded the bases, when a throwing error from the third baseman allowed Sinclair to come around and score, making the score 3-2, and Wagenbrenner to advance to third.

Paver took a free bag at second base, and a single up the middle from Jen Lorenz drove home Wagenbrenner, extending the Titans lead to 4-2.

With Paver on third base, Sydney Pollock hit a groundball to second base, allowing Paver to score and extended the Titans lead to 5-2.

Liz Murphy entered the game in the top of the seventh and retired the batters she faced 1-2-3, clinching her seventh save of the season and second place in the Horizon League in the process.

Ashley Mauser went six innings, scattering four hits, two earned runs, and three strikeouts.
