BOSTON (4/5/2019) -- Freshman
Antoine Davis received another accolade for his outstanding rookie campaign as he was named a finalists for the 2019 Kyle Macy award, presented annually to the top freshman in college basketball.
The award is the latest national honor for Davis who was a finalist for the USBWA Wayman Tisdale Award for the National Freshman Player of the Year, USBWA All-District V selection and the NABC All-District Second Team nominee.Â
He was also tabbed the Horizon League Freshman of the Year and First Team All-HL.Â
Davis led the Horizon League in scoring at 26.1 points per game, third in the nation and just the fifth Titan to ever top the HL. The 26.1 scoring average was also fourth in school history behind some impressive names in Spencer Haywood (32.1 - 1968-69), Bill Ebben (27.8 - 1956-57) and Dave DeBusschere (26.8 - 1961-62) and fifth in conference history trailing only Loyola's Alfredrick Hughes (27.6 - 1983-84, 26.3 - 1984-85), Loyola's Keith Gailes (26.3 - 1989-90) and Butler's Darrin Fitzgerald (26.2 -1987-87).Â
He was also top 15 in the country in 3-pointers per game (4.40-second), total 3-pointers (132-fifth), field goals (263-12th) and total points (784-10th).Â
His 784 points was a Titan and Horizon League freshman record and just one point off the school record for points in a season, while his 132, 3-pointers on the year set a new NCAA freshman record, passing the mark of 122 by Stephen Curry at Davidson in 2006-07. The 132 triples were also the second most in school history and fifth most in the Horizon League record book.Â
On the year, he recorded 23, 20-point games as well as nine 30+ point outings, including a Titan and Horizon League freshman record 48 points against Wright State, the second most in school history and the sixth most in HL play. In that contest, he also tied a school mark nailing 10, 3-pointers.Â
The award is named after Kyle Macy. The 1975 Indiana "Mr. Basketball" played his freshman season at Purdue University, averaging 13.8 points per game before transferring to Kentucky in 1976. A three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC player, Macy was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team. In his senior year of 1979-80, he became the first Kentucky player ever to be named consensus Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.
The recipient of the 2019 Kyle Macy award will be announced on April 5 at the College Insider Awards Event, in Minneapolis, site of the 2019 NCAA Division I basketball championship.
