DETROIT (7/9/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball program and head coach
Bernard Scott has announced the addition of two transfers with redshirt sophomore forward
Nicole Johanson and junior guard
Aly Reiff joining the Titans. Both student-athletes are enrolled in school and have joined the Titans for summer workouts.
Reiff, a transfer from Xavier where she played for two seasons, is a native of South Whitley, Ind. and Whitko High School. At Xavier, Reiff played in 57 total games during her two years, including playing in 29 of 30 games during the 2018-19 season. She averaged 2.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 13.7 minutes per game for the Musketeers last season, sinking 34.3 percent of her field goal attempts, including a 37.8-percent clip from 3-point range. She scored a career-high 21 points against Bowling Green last season.
"Aly played two years in the Big East Conference so she's battle-tested and adds experience for us at the stretch-four position," coach Scott said. "She's a player that can knock down shots consistently from the three and she can also score off the bounce. She's going to have a major impact because of how versatile she is. What I like most about Aly is she's tough and very competitive and that will definitely help us here."
Reiff was a standout high school player at Whitko in Indiana, setting numerous school records, including in points (1,746), points per game (17.5), assists (534), steals (388), while also ranking second in both rebounds (670) and blocks (127). She was one of seven players during the 2016-17 season to be nominated for the McDonald's All-American Game in the state of Indiana and was a four-time First Team All-Conference honoree and two-time Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) All-State First Team selection.
Johanson, a 6-foot-5 forward, joins the Detroit Mercy program via a former Horizon League foe in Valparaiso, where she spent each of the past two seasons. She was redshirted during her first season in 2017-18 and played in three games for the Crusaders last season under a new coaching staff. She is a native of Herscher, Ill. and Herscher High School, where she was a 1,000-point scorer and helped her squad to a 25-2 season during her season year of high school.
"Nicole is a skilled 6-5 post that can finish with either hand," coach Scott said. "She's also capable of stepping out and knocking down a catch and shoot 3-pointer. She moves well for 6-5 and with that height she will be very effective on both ends of the court."
Both players are among the new faces on the team that include five freshmen, who have all joined the Titans in June. The Titans are currently participating in summer workouts on campus and stay tuned for more information regarding the Titan women's basketball program.
