DETROIT (1/12/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team opened the 2020 year at its home invitational on Sunday as the Titans welcomed six other men's fencing programs into town for the 2020 Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational from Calihan Hall.
The Titans finished 1-5 as a team with a 14-12 victory over Oakland on Sunday. Detroit Mercy dropped matchups with Cleveland State (4-23), Wayne State (3-24), Michigan (3-24), Lawrence (8-18) and Michigan State (8-19).
The men's sabre squad led the team with 12 bout wins on the day, while the men's epee team picked up another 10 for the Titans. Senior epeeistÂ
Christopher Morrison led the squad with six bout victories, earning multiple wins against both Michigan and Oakland.
Sophomore
Jaydon Alojipan and graduate studentÂ
James Baker both earned five victories for the Titans in sabre on Sunday. Alojipan had two victories against Cleveland State, while Baker picked up two victories against Michigan State. Newcomer
Jackson Stachelek also had two bout victories in sabre for the red, white and blue.
In epee, sophomore
Peter Swanney picked up two victories, while sophomores
Bryce Sturgis and
Paul Rider each earned one in epee for the Titans. In foil, newcomers
Joey Kachachi and
Kurt Romkema both picked up their first collegiate wins for the red, white and blue.

The Titans are back in action next weekend in a pair of duals, heading to New York for the Army Duals in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday, Jan. 18, before heading to the Vassar Duals on Sunday, Jan. 19 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
