SOUTH BEND, Ind. (1/25/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing squad competed in day one at the 2020 DeCicco Duals, held on the campus of the University of Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The Titans went head-to-head with six other fencing programs, including host and No. 2-ranked Notre Dame, Cleveland State and Lawrence, among others.
Titan senior fencer
James Baker led Detroit Mercy with eight bout victories on the day, going 8-8 overall in sabre for the red, white and blue. Baker went 3-0 against Dension and earned at least one win against five of the six schools. He had multiple victories against Florida and went 1-1 against both Lawrence and Northwestern.
Also in sabre, sophomore
Jaydon Alojipan had six bout victories for the Titans, while
Jackson Stachelek added another bout win. Alojipan earned two wins against both Florida and Denison. Stachelek picked up his lone victory against Florida as the men's sabre team won 5-4 over Florida as a weapon.
Senior
Christopher Morrison led men's epee with six victories on the afternoon. He finished the day 6-12 overall and had multiple victories over Florida and Northwestern.
Bryce Sturgis and
Peter Swanney each picked up bout wins for the Titans, with Swanney's coming against Florida and Sturgis' against Denison.
In foil, newcomer
Kurt Romkema had three wins for the Titans in the weapon and fellow newcomer
Jaylin Brown added another bout triumph.
The Titans dropped all six head-to-heads on the day, falling to No. 2 Notre Dame (0-27), Florida (9-18), Cleveland State (2-25), Denison (9-18), Lawrence (9-18) and Northwestern (10-17).

Detroit Mercy returns to dual competition next weekend, heading to the Northwestern Mega-Meet from Evanston, Ill., held on Saturday, Feb. 1 and wrapping up on Sunday, Feb. 2. The Titans then fence in Detroit the following weekend, competing at the Wayne State Duals in midtown Detroit on the campus of WSU.
