DETROIT (1/3/2020) -- Coming off its first Horizon League win of the season, the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team plays again on the road, visiting IUPUI for a 2 p.m. ET game Saturday from The Jungle. It's the third league game of the season for the Titans (1-1 HL).

The Titans are coming off a 70-62 win at UIC on Thursday. Detroit Mercy used a 13-4 run to end the first half and never looked back, leading the rest of the contest. Freshman guard
Markyia McCormick scored 18 points -- 12 of them in the second quarter -- and the Titans shot 45-percent from the floor in the victory.
On The Court:
- The Titans have secured three Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors this season from three different players -- Sylare Starks (Nov. 25), Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16) and Markyia McCormick (Dec. 23). It's the first time since the league went to a Freshman of the Week format that three different freshmen from the same team have received the honor in a season.
- Markyia McCormick scored in double figures for the fourth time in her past six games on Thursday against UIC; She ranks second on the team in scoring at 8.8 points per game. McCormick is averaging 12.8 points per game across her past six contests for the Titans.
- Freshman guard Sylare Starks leads all Horizon League freshmen in scoring at 9.8 points per game; She also leads the Titans. Starks and McCormick rank No. 1-3 among league freshmen in scoring following Thursday's games.
- Senior Zoey Oatis ranks second in the Horizon League in steals per game (2.1). She has tallied nine games of multiple steals in 2019-20.
- It's the fifth meeting between the two women's basketball programs; IUPUI holds a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series.
- Detroit Mercy shot above 40-percent mark for the sixth time this season on Thursday against UIC. Detroit Mercy also scored 70 points for the second time this season.
- Junior Aly Reiff tied her career-high with seven rebounds against the Flames.
- The Titans are one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I with 10 underclassmen (five freshmen, five sophomores) and holds an average age of 19.3 on its roster.
- Head coach Bernard Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans and has led them to two top-four finishes and a Horizon League championship game in 2017.
- The Titans were picked to finish in ninth place in the 2019-20 Horizon League Preseason Poll.
Last Time Out
The Titans used a 13-4 run to gain the lead and never relinquished that advantage, securing a 70-62 road victory at UIC on Thursday from Chicago. Detroit Mercy gained a 39-32 halftime lead after that late second-quarter surge and then sank its free throws down the stretch to help put the Flames away. Detroit Mercy shot 45-percent in the game and sank 21-of-30 free throws (70 percent).
Freshman guard
Markyia McCormick scored a team-high 18 points -- 12 of them in the second quarter -- and Detroit Mercy scored 25 points in the second stanza overall.
Sylare Starks added 10 points as six different Titans scored more than seven points.
Scouting IUPUI:
- IUPUI is coming off a 76-41 victory over Oakland on Thursday and has won two-straight Horizon League games after defeating Cleveland State earlier this week in Cleveland, 78-53.
- Junior forward Macee Williams had double-doubles in both games, scoring 33 points at Cleveland State and adding 18 points against Oakland.
- The Jaguars are 2-1 in Horizon League play overall.
- Williams leads the team and ranks third in the HL in scoring (16.6 ppg), while leading all league players in rebounding (10.1 rpg).
- Senior guard Holly Hoopingarner ranks second in scoring at 10.6 points per game and leads the team in assists (44) and steals (26).
- IUPUI has three players that have sank more than 20, 3-pointers this season -- Sydney Roule (21), Natalie Anderson (21) and Hoopingarner (20).
Trio of HL Freshman of the Week Honors
Three Titan freshmen have earned Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors early in the 2019-20 season with
Sylare Starks (Nov. 25),
Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16) and
Markyia McCormick (Dec. 23) all receiving the weekly accolade in the first seven weeks of the season. Detroit Mercy has the most HL Freshman of the Week honors so far this season and it's the first time three different freshmen from the same team have been bestowed with the honor since the Horizon League moved to a Freshman of the Week format prior to the 2013-14 campaign.
